Raúl Goñi projects posters by leading graphic designers onto Barcelona's buildings from his rooftop terrace

In his ongoing 'Public Protest Poster' project, graphic designer Raúl Goñi has been researching fresh ways to communicate messages in cities – and during the lockdown, it's taken on a whole new meaning.

Taking a selection of bespoke poster designs by graphic artists he admires from all over the world, he projects them from his rooftop terrace onto nearby buildings in Barcelona's Gràcia district. Those featured include Anthony Burrill, Chris Clarke, Sarah Boris, Mario Eskenazi, Patrick Thomas, Ibán Ramón, Loesje, Carles Murillo, Sister Corita, Eike Koning, Ryan Carl, Fraser Mudderidge and Joan Brossa, among others.

The Spanish designer is now partnering with coder Santi Grau to create a web app that will let anyone design their own typography-based poster in just five minutes and share it with the community in its gallery, on social media or get a print-ready PDF to use in public spaces. "All the anonymous posters will be projected from my rooftop terrace, giving a voice to anyone who wants to take part in the project. A gift to the people, the neighbourhood and the city," Raúl tells Creative Boom.

Originally from Navarra but based in Barcelona, Raúl is a professor at Elisava and a student in the MA Design & Communication programme. "My project takes a practical approach to research the present and future of posters in cities. The goal is to take back our public space dominated by advertising, to foster poster-based design culture, to provide the tools and a voice for anyone with something to say by projecting posters on the walls around this designer on lockdown," he adds.
