June Allyson: The Girl Next Door Who Became A Hollywood Star

June Allyson was an American actress who starred in films, television, and on stage. She was known for her wholesome image and her roles in musical films such as The Harvey Girls (1946), Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), and The Stratton Story (1949).

Allyson was born Eleanor Geisman in the Bronx, New York, in 1917. She began her acting career in the 1930s, appearing in a number of short films and on Broadway. In 1943, she signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and her career took off.

Allyson starred in a string of successful films in the 1940s and 1950s, including The Harvey Girls (1946), Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), The Stratton Story (1949), and Too Young to Kiss (1951). She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in The Stratton Story.

Allyson continued to act throughout her career, appearing in films such as The Poseidon Adventure (1972) and Murder, She Wrote (1984-1996). She also had a successful career on television, appearing in shows such as The Love Boat and Fantasy Island.

Allyson died in 2006 at the age of 88. She was a popular and versatile actress who had a long and successful career. She will be remembered for her wholesome image and her roles in classic films. Allyson was known for her girl-next-door image, which was helped by her wholesome personality and her natural acting ability. She was also a talented singer, and her singing voice was featured in many of her films.

Allyson was married twice, first to actor Dick Powell from 1945 to 1963, and then to businessman David Merrick from 1963 until his death in 1997. She had two children with Powell.
