The Best Horror Movie of Every Year in the 2010s

Tags: horror movie film

Even though the real terrors lie within our very own world, there is still a large percentage of people who absolutely love horror movies. Something about the controlled fear and being able to watch someone’s twisted imagination come to life is exhilarating. As technology continues to progress, professionals dive deeper into the minds of some of the most ruthless killers, and people dabble in the supernatural, horror movies are simply getting better and better over time. This last decade, the 2010s, we were introduced to the Insidious franchise, and we learned about several of the paranormal cases Ed and Lorraine Warren worked on in films like The Conjuring and Annabelle.

Films such as A Quiet Place and Don’t Breathe found a way to play on an audience’s natural fear when a person who is deprived of one of their five senses finds themselves in a horrific situation. If a real horror fan attempted to find a common theme among most of the horror films that were released in the 2010s, they may find that most of the movies either have psychologically tortured characters or they greatly deal with the paranormal.

Here are the best horror movies of each year in the 2010s.

2010: Insidious

FilmDistrict

With five movies out and a sixth on its way, it feels like the Insidious franchise has been around forever. While the 2010 film does not begin the overall storyline (thanks to the two prequels, Chapter 3 and The Last Key), it presented a unique concept that there is purgatory-like dimension that houses tortured and restless spirits. The even scarier part is that some of these beings desperately want to make their way back to the real world to harm and torment others.

Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne star as Josh and Renai Lambert, a married couple whose son, Dalton (Ty Simpkins) finds himself trapped in the spirit world. Josh must uncover a terrifying memory and save his son, but once they come back, something else has attached itself to Josh.

2011: You’re Next

Lionsgate

2011 was the year of psychological thrillers and dramas, but You’re Next stands out as the traditional horror slasher film that ends with more dead bodies than living characters. The Step Up 3D actress, Sharni Vinson, plays Erin, a seemingly normal young woman who turns into a badass survivalist after she finds herself and her boyfriend’s whole family facing a group of masked killers.

The masked individuals begin attacking the family during a reunion to their rural vacation home, but as the bodies start piling up, Erin discovers that some of the members conspired and hired the attackers to kill off certain individuals for their own personal gain.

2012: Sinister

Lionsgate

In comparison to other films from 2012 such as Daniel Radcliffe’s The Woman in Black, Jennifer Lawrence’s House at the End of the Street, and yet another possession movie entitled The Possession, Sinister stands out for its creative nature and horrific tale. A cruel deity identified as Bughuul has been influencing children all across America nearly 50 years. He possesses their bodies, brutally murders their families, and records the whole incident to be passed on to his next victims.

When Ellison (Ethan Hawke) discovers this, he immediately packs up his family and moves away from their new home. Unfortunately, by doing so, he solidifies himself, his wife, and at least one of their children to a cruel fate at the hands of the other child.

2013: The Conjuring

Warner Bros. Pictures

2013 was an incredible year for horror movies. Mama, Evil Dead, and The Purge had fans captivated and horrified, but The Conjuring still managed to stick out to those who did their homework and realized that behind the terrifying scenes was the true tale of a wicked demonic spirit.

The Conjuring follows the story of how Ed and Lorraine Warren (portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) manage to help the Perrons rid their themselves of an evil spirit, Bathsheba, that has attached itself to Carolyn (Lili Taylor) in an attempt to kill her five daughters. While the film is quite terrifying, the real fear lies in the fact that it is based on a true story.

2014: The Babadook

Umbrella Entertainment

If you already have a fear of the dark, don’t bother watching The Babadook; it will turn you into a full-on insomniac who keeps the lights on day and night. When Amelia notices her six-year-old son, Sam, refusing to sleep, talking about a strange monster, and actually creating weapons to defend himself, she realizes there is something more going on than a typical kid’s imagination.

When Amelia finally sees the disfigured humanoid creature her son has been fearing, everything in her life changes. If she ignores it, its terrorizing tactics worsen, but if she embraces and faces the monster, it retreats. Plenty of critics have mentioned how the film truly strikes fear into all who watch it, and Rotten Tomatoes gave it a nearly perfect score.

2015: It Follows

RADiUS-TWC

After a successful limited release, It Follows was re-released on a wider scale in March 2015. The story primarily follows an average college student, Jay Height (Maika Monroe), as she finds out that she is being pursued by an entity that no one else can see. Jay’s former boyfriend explained that he had previously been the being’s target until he and Jay had sex; now the invisible killer is after her.

It takes a moment for this all to sink in, but when Jay realizes the truth behind it all, she naturally becomes terrified. Her options are to face the killer and likely be killed or pass on her unfortunate situation to someone else. Plans are made and carried out, but the ending leaves much to be interpreted.

2016: Don’t Breathe

Sony Pictures Releasing

When you first begin watching Don’t Breathe, you will find yourself rooting for the blind Gulf War veteran, Norman Nordstrom (Stephen Lang), because he is the one getting robbed by three young delinquents. However, when two of the robbers, Rocky and Alex (Jane Levy and Dylan Minnette), find a pregnant woman tied up in Norman’s basement, secrets unravel, and a very disturbing reality sets in.

Don’t Breathe plays on the fear of having to evade a lethal individual that just so happens to be blind. As an audience member, you will find yourself holding your breath and being hyper-aware of all the little noises going on around you as you question if you could also escape a horrible fate.

2017: Get Out

Universal Pictures

2017 saw some incredible horror films including Mother!, The Ritual, and It, but the performances and storyline of Get Out certainly earned this psychological horror movie the top spot for the year.

Daniel Kaluuya plays Chris, a Black man who finds himself feeling uneasy when he meets his white girlfriend’s parents for the very first time. Chris notices other Black individuals in their secluded neighborhood acting a bit strange, and when he attempts to take a man’s picture, he is attacked.

Chris ends up in a hostage situation where he learns that his girlfriend’s family has been transplanting their brains into the bodies of Black individuals to gain favorable characteristics. Chris is their next target, but he is not willing to give up without a fight against anyone.

2018: Hereditary

A24

Absolutely nothing could have prepared audiences for the twists and turns within this psychological and supernatural horror film. Hereditary begins with a funeral of Annie’s secretive mother, but the strange and eerie feeling does not come from the solemn event. Rather, an unnatural feeling comes from the fact that the family members seem distant from one another instead of comforting.

Later on, after the youngest child goes into anaphylactic shock from eating nuts, she faces a horrifying death by decapitation. Her brother, who was driving the car with her in it, goes into shock and simply drives home. The following morning, Annie finds her daughter’s headless body, and a string of events leads to a demonic king finding his way into the family to take his chosen human form.

2019: Us

Universal Pictures

2019 was a great year for the horror movie industry as It Chapter Two, Annabelle Comes Home, and Midsommar were released. However, in comparison to the psychological horror film Us, the others did not stand a chance in the top spot. Lupita Nyong’o stars as the main character, Adelaide Wilson, as well as her own doppelgänger, Red.

The story focuses on how government-created clones rise up against their counterparts in an attempt to take over their lives. Adelaide, along with the rest of her family, manage to fight off their doppelgängers, but Adelaide has a deep secret; she is actually a clone that switched places with the real Addy when she was just a child.
