Summary

  • Theater Camp‘s ending features a live stream of the musical Joan, Still, which becomes a way to save the camp from potential buyers.
  • Susie Essman makes a brilliant cameo as Joan’s hospital roommate in the mid-credits scene, praising the campers’ performance on-screen.
  • In addition to Theater Camp, Essman has appeared in notable comedy shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm and has lent her voice to various animated projects.

One of Theater Camp‘s best gags involves a cameo from Susie Essman. The iconic comedian and actor has very little screen time, but she certainly makes the most of it. At the beginning of the film, Joan Rubinsky (Amy Sedaris), the director and co-founder of AdirondACTS, falls into a strobe light-induced coma. This leaves the summer camp for theater nerds in the hands of her non-dramatist son, Troy (Jimmy Tatro). With the camp facing foreclosure in his mother’s absence, Troy is faced with difficult choices. Meanwhile, former campers-turned-staffers Amos (Ben Platt) and Rebecca-Diane (Molly Gordon) pen a musical based on Joan’s life.

That original musical, aptly titled Joan, Still, serves a grander purpose in the film’s ending. In true genre fashion, the movie culminates with a performance of the musical, which, of course, becomes a means of persuading characters with deep pockets to save the summer camp from potential buyers. Hoping to involve the still-comatose Joan in the production, Troy sets up a live stream of the musical in her hospital room in the hopes that she’ll hear it. That’s where Essman’s brilliant Theater Camp cameo comes into play.

Susie Essman Cameos As Joan’s Hospital Roommate In Theater Camp’s Mid-Credits Scene

The well-intentioned Troy makes his fair share of mistakes, but deep down, he cares about his mother and her camp — even when he doesn’t quite click with the theater-obsessed campers. Sweetly, he attempts to set up a live stream of the camp’s performance of Joan, Still in his mom’s hospital room, but things don’t go as planned. While Troy sets up the live stream in the correct room, he fails to involve Joan at all. Instead, Essman’s character gets to watch the musical that unfolds during Theater Camp‘s ending.

With the live stream set up in front of her bed, Essman’s unnamed character, who is Joan’s hospital roommate, tunes into the show. While the campers take their bows, she ends up appearing on an on-screen stage behind them and praising them for her efforts. Although the campers, counselors, and Troy are confused at first, they realize the error. The Theater Camp mid-credits scene shows Joan waking up from her coma and chatting with Essman, who goes on and on about the musical that she got to witness. It’s a small cameo, but as always, Essman steals the show, making Theater Camp‘s streaming release all the more exciting.

What Other Movies & TV Shows Susie Essman Has Been In

While Essman cut her teeth in standup comedy, she’s also appeared in dozens of top-tier comedy movies over the years. One of her most notable roles is as part of Curb Your Enthusiasm‘s cast of characters. As the foul-mouthed (but always hilarious) Susie Greene, Essman keeps Larry David’s fictionalized version of himself on his toes. Aside from that and her Theater Camp role, Essman has appeared in series like Broad City, The Goldbergs, and Hacks. She’s also lent her voice to animated projects like Adventure Time, American Dad!, Harley Quinn, and Bob’s Burgers.
