SHOCKING! Warner Bros. TV HALTS A-List Producer Deals: Berlanti, Abrams, Kaling, and More SUSPENDED! What's Behind the Pause?
Warner Bros. TV isn't sparing its A-list producers as it suspends overall deals. The list includes industry heavyweights like Greg Berlanti, Bill Lawrence, John Wells, Chuck Lorre, Mindy Kaling, and J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot.
History of Suspensions
This isn't the first time. Earlier, Warner Bros. TV, along with other major studios, halted some deals during the ongoing writers strike, which began in May.
Still Rolling
Initially, these suspensions excluded producers with ongoing productions. At that time, the SAG-AFTRA strike hadn't started, so actors were still on set, and production continued for already written shows.
DGA Members in Action
Some writer/producers are also DGA members and directors for their projects. Since the DGA reached a deal with the AMPTP and avoided a strike, they continued their duties.
The Turning Point
Things took a turn when SAG-AFTRA joined the WGA strike in July. When talent can't work, the typical policy is to suspend deals.
Different from Termination
This suspension is different from termination. Terminations haven't been common, even though the writers strike has passed the 90-day mark.
What Overall Deals Mean
Overall deals cover a writer's company's overhead and project development costs. First-look deals offer financial support and grant the studio or company priority for potential series or film distribution.
Temporary Pause
Insiders say suspensions usually delay deals when no work is happening anyway. When production restarts, the deals resume, adding the suspended time to the end of the agreement.
However, it means that companies like Bad Robot will temporarily pause overhead payments, affecting their staff in the interim.
