DM Tips: Adventures with Downtime

Dungeon Masters, are you ready to unlock the secrets of crafting an immersive D&D campaign? I’m thrilled to share a new approach that I’ve recently adopted, and it’s been an absolute game-changer. I’m currently running a campaign using the new Keys from the Golden Vault anthology of adventures, and the experience has been nothing short of extraordinary.

These adventures, each structured like a heist, cover character levels from 1 to 11, providing a clean roadmap for your campaign. Each adventure lasts just two or three sessions, keeping gameplay fresh and players engaged. But here’s the real magic: in between each adventure, I encourage my party to delve into downtime activities.

These activities aren’t just idle pastimes; they evolve into small jobs or side-quests, offering each player a chance to explore their character’s individuality. As a DM, I’ve found this to be a goldmine for weaving personal plot and adventure hooks into the narrative. It’s often challenging to incorporate individual character hooks into pre-written adventures, but with staggered adventures and downtime, it’s a breeze.

What’s more, downtime activities can be run individually outside of normal sessions, fostering unique interactions and experiences for each player. The beauty of this approach is that it adds depth to roleplay when players know their party members possess knowledge and experiences known only to them. So, if you’re seeking a campaign structure that fosters creativity, engagement, and personalized storytelling, give this adventure structure a try. Your players will thank you!
