Pro-Palestinian Jews Arrested in Capitol Hill Chaos: ‘Moral Catastrophe’

Protesters Call for Ceasefire Between Israel and Hamas in D.C.

Protesters from across the country gathered at Capitol Hill on Wednesday, urging for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The demonstration led to the arrest of approximately 300 individuals.

Liv, a member of the activist group Jewish Voice for Peace, expressed their urgency, saying, “We were raised saying ‘Never again.’ Never again is right now. It’s this very moment.”

More than 5,000 people have lost their lives since the conflict between Hamas and Israel began.

Thousands of demonstrators, many wearing black T-shirts that read, “Jews say ceasefire now!”, swarmed around the Cannon House Office Building. Among the arrestees were at least three individuals facing charges of assaulting a police officer. Those who entered the Cannon Rotunda will be charged with illegal protesting inside a House office building.

Louisa, with her hands bound, highlighted the significance of civil disobedience, emphasizing the need for Congress and President Biden to act swiftly. She stressed, “I feel that Biden needs to stand up and help facilitate a ceasefire so no more people die.”

The demonstration had been planned a few days in advance, with participants coming from various parts of the country to send a message to President Biden and Congress, demanding a ceasefire.

One demonstrator, Michael, emphasized the U.S. government’s responsibility, stating, “We need to stop sending money, stop stationing troops.”

The protesters included dozens of rabbis and children of Holocaust survivors. Some likened Israel’s actions to a “genocide.”

Jewish Voice for Peace had previously criticized Hamas’ attacks on civilians as “horrific war crimes.” However, they noted that the conflict between Palestinians and Israel is not an “equal situation.”

Anti-Defamation League’s D.C. chapter condemned the protests, labeling the participating organizations as “far-left radical” and “anti-Zionist.” Protesters argued that not all Jews share the same viewpoint and that many sympathize with the Palestinian struggle.

The demonstrators also included members of the activist group IfNotNow, who reported similar civil disobedience actions in Boston. They demanded Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s support for a ceasefire.
