Doctors Without Borders reports artillery fire in troubled Sudanese city, leaving 11 dead and 90 injured

Artillery Attack Claims 11 Lives and Injures 90 in Conflict-Stricken Sudan

In a grim turn of events, a violent artillery bombardment in a strife-ridden city in Sudan has left 11 people dead and 90 others injured. The humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders, known as MSF, reported the incident.

The attack took place on Thursday in the Karari neighborhood of Omdurman city. The victims included children, a heart-wrenching detail omitted in the initial reports. MSF shared this distressing news on X (formerly known as Twitter) but refrained from attributing responsibility to any of the warring factions within the country.

The conflict that has engulfed Sudan since mid-April, pitting the country’s military led by General Abdel Fattah Burhan against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces commanded by General Mohamed Hamden Dagalo, has not only affected the capital, Khartoum, but also spilled into the neighboring city of Omdurman. This violent upheaval has also exacerbated ethnic tensions in Sudan’s western Darfur region.

Those injured in the attack received medical care at Al Nao hospital in Omdurman, one of the many medical facilities where MSF is providing assistance.

The situation in Sudan remains dire, with millions displaced from their homes in a desperate quest for safety and refuge, according to the latest data from the United Nations. The figures reveal that 4.3 million people are internally displaced within Sudan, while 1.2 million have sought refuge in neighboring countries. An alarming 18 million people in Sudan are now in dire need of humanitarian assistance.

The United Nations’ humanitarian coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, expressed her concern during a recent news conference, emphasizing that the situation is precarious and described it as “the world’s fastest-growing displacement crisis.” The conflict has already claimed the lives of at least 5,000 people and left over 12,000 others injured, though activists and local medical groups argue that the true death toll is likely much higher. The people of Sudan continue to grapple with the devastating consequences of this ongoing conflict.
