Kosovo accuses Serbia of plotting recent terror attack, stoking fears of new Balkan conflict

Kosovo Reveals Seized Weapons After Recent Siege

In a tense situation that unfolded recently, Kosovo has urged Serbia to hand over those involved in a deadly shootout between Kosovar police and ethnic Serb gunmen. The clash occurred in the northern part of Kosovo and claimed the lives of four people. Explosive new evidence from Kosovo has raised the stakes in the ongoing tensions between these two Balkan nations.

Around 30 armed gunmen opened fire on police in the predominantly Serb village of Banjska, situated in northern Kosovo. Following the shootout, they also stormed an Orthodox monastery, resulting in the death of one police officer and injuries to two others. Kosovo police discovered a cache of weaponry, including 24 SUVs, 29 anti-tank rocket-propelled grenade launchers, 150 explosive dynamites, 142 mortar shells, 75 hand grenades, seven rocket-propelled grenade launchers, and eight anti-tank mines.

Leon Hartwell, a non-resident senior fellow at the Center for European Policy Analysis, emphasized that these weapons were not just random small arms. He suggested that they likely came from a state source, with Belgrade being the most likely origin.

Diplomatic Sources Allege Larger Plan

According to diplomatic sources, the attack appears to be part of a larger and deliberate plan, possibly involving Russian assistance, aimed at inciting a rebellion in northern Kosovo. This rebellion could serve as a pretext for the Serbian army to enter the region, justifying it as the protection of Serbian minorities and cultural heritage.

Serbia’s ambassador to the U.S., Marko Djuric, rejected claims that Belgrade had prior knowledge of the attack, emphasizing that those responsible were being brought to justice.

Arrest of Milan Radoicic

Milan Radoicic, the vice president of the leading Serbian political party in Kosovo, who was under U.S. sanctions for criminal activities, was arrested and admitted to planning and participating in the attack. However, he claimed to have acted independently, without government direction.

Kosovo’s ambassador to the U.S., Ilir Dugolli, likened Serbia’s actions to Russia’s modus operandi in various aspects.

Growing Concerns of a Russian-Like Scenario

There is a growing concern that Kosovo might be facing a situation similar to a Russian invasion. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has cited protecting ethnic Serb minorities in northern Kosovo as a reason for Serbia’s actions, mirroring Putin’s justifications for the invasion of eastern Ukraine in 2022.

Biden Administration’s Concerns

The Biden administration has expressed concerns about Serbia’s recent behavior, and many observers believe that the attack was too elaborate for the Serbian president or government to be unaware of.

Kosovo’s Response

Kosovo’s government stated that Serbian armed forces have been moving along the northern border, while the Serbian ambassador to the U.S. denied these claims.

Turbulent Times for Relations

This situation has created the most turbulent period in Serb-Kosovo relations since Kosovo’s declaration of independence in 2008, although experts remain skeptical about the possibility of a full-scale war.

Balancing Act for Serbia

President Vucic has tried to balance relations with Russia while seeking European integration. The ongoing dispute with Kosovo, along with recent bloodshed implicating Belgrade, remains a significant obstacle to Serbia’s EU membership.

Warning of Potential Instability

Analysts warn against underestimating Vucic’s potential to destabilize the Balkan region. They caution that actions taken in Kosovo could have repercussions beyond the region.

Unresolved Territorial Dispute

The territorial dispute between Serbia and Kosovo, stemming from the 1999 war, remains unresolved and hampers further European integration. Kosovo declared independence in 2008, but Serbia and Russia have not recognized it.
