Dallas Police release footage of shootout with illegal immigrant who fired into truck, killing his roommate

Illegal Immigrant Arrested After Shootout and Arrest

Dallas Police have released body camera footage of a dramatic shootout and subsequent arrest of an illegal immigrant. This individual is accused of fatally shooting his roommate in broad daylight and injuring a police officer.

The incident unfolded last Thursday when Officers Derek Williams and Christopher Mazin were driving near a business on Scyene Road. They spotted a man, later identified as 45-year-old Juan Vicente Zavala Lopez, firing shots at someone inside a truck.

Without hesitation, the officers parked nearby, drew their weapons, and confronted the suspect. Zavala Lopez fired at the officers, hitting their patrol car. In response, the officers returned fire and then resumed chasing the suspect.

As the pursuit continued on Second Avenue, Zavala Lopez suddenly executed a U-turn and drove back toward the officers. They had stopped and exited their vehicle. Officer Williams engaged in a gunfight with the suspect, resulting in Williams being hit on his ballistic vest. The patrol car also took several hits.

Officer Williams was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment but was later released. Fortunately, Officer Mazin emerged from the incident unharmed.

Tragically, the initial shooting claimed the life of Ruperto Mondragon Salgado, aged 60, who died at the scene. Another individual inside the targeted vehicle was unharmed.

A subsequent search led authorities to a residence in Lewisville. The Dallas Police Fugitive Unit, along with Dallas Police SWAT and Lewisville Police, coordinated efforts to apprehend the suspect. Zavala Lopez was discovered in a barn on the property and taken into police custody. He now faces charges of murder and aggravated assault for the initial shooting, along with four additional counts of aggravated assault against police officers.

Police Chief Eddie Garcia stated that the initial shooting appeared to be a domestic dispute between roommates. Zavala Lopez is currently detained in the Dallas County Jail, with bonds exceeding $1 million.

It’s worth noting that Zavala Lopez entered the country illegally and is facing a detainer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Police Chief Garcia also revealed that Zavala Lopez has a significant criminal history, having been deported nine times previously and serving 18 months in a Texas state prison. He also faces charges in California.

This incident highlights the challenges and complexities associated with immigration and law enforcement in our country.
