Birmingham police chief decries ‘senseless violence’ after gunshot victims fired upon outside emergency room

Two Women Killed in Birmingham Hospital Shooting

The police chief of one of Alabama’s largest cities is condemning what he calls “senseless violence” after a shooting outside a hospital’s emergency room left two women dead.

Victims Identified
Markiezia Atkins, 24, and Chaveda Willis, 33, were identified as the victims of the tragic incident at UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

Timeline of Events
The shooting unfolded in the early hours of Monday. It is believed to have stemmed from an altercation at Aria Restaurant and Lounge around 2 a.m.

Police Response
Upon receiving reports of the incident, the police responded swiftly. They cordoned off the area outside the emergency room and placed the hospital on lockdown.

Birmingham Police Chief’s Response
Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond expressed his dismay at the violence. He stated, “As a result, we have two women whose lives were cut entirely too short. Two families were destroyed, and three other victims will have to live with the scars of this senseless violence for the rest of their lives.” Thurmond urged citizens to seek non-violent conflict resolution.

Appeal for Peace
He emphasized, “Put the guns down, they don’t solve problems, they only create bigger problems, and destroy families and our city. Birmingham and our residents deserve better.”

Second Shooting
In a second incident at the hospital, an unoccupied University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) police vehicle was struck.

Seeking Medical Help
A Chevrolet Tahoe arrived at the emergency room entrance with multiple gunshot victims from the first shooting. Another vehicle then opened fire at the Tahoe before fleeing the scene.

Targeted Attack
Police believe the initial shooting was a targeted attack, but many of the victims were innocent bystanders.

Ongoing Investigation
As of midday Tuesday, no arrests have been made, and police are searching for at least two suspects involved in the shootings.

The incident is a stark reminder of the need for peaceful conflict resolution and the avoidance of violence in our communities.
