Lyra McKee Mural Defaced by ‘Disgusting’ Anti-LGBTQ Graffiti in Florida

Mural Honoring Slain Journalist Lyra McKee Defaced in Florida

A Mural paying tribute to the memory of Lyra McKee, a journalist who tragically lost her life, has been targeted by vandals in the U.S. state of Florida. The mural, located at the Zebra Youth Organization, which offers support to LGBTQ+ youth, was marred with offensive symbols including a swastika, a target, and anti-LGBTQ+ graffiti.

Lyra McKee’s untimely death occurred during a period of unrest in the Creggan area of Londonderry on April 18, 2019. The incident was linked to the New IRA, a dissident republican group. The defacement of the mural ignited global outrage and condemnation.

The mural was unveiled in Orlando, a city Ms. McKee had expressed interest in visiting back in 2017. This gesture held particular significance as Orlando had previously suffered the tragic loss of 49 lives in a shooting at a local gay nightclub. In solidarity, Orlando’s council extended their condolences to Ms. McKee’s loved ones.

Anna Vishkaee Eskamani, a Member of the Florida House of Representatives, expressed her strong disapproval of the graffiti through a social media post, labeling it as “absolutely disgusting.” She pledged to identify those responsible and hold them accountable for their actions.

The defacement was promptly addressed by volunteers from Zebra Youth, who worked to restore the mural to its original state. In response to the incident, Zebra Youth conveyed on social media their commitment to cooperation with the Orlando Police Department in identifying and prosecuting this hate crime. Their post emphasized their dedication to ensuring the safety of LGBTQ+ youth and staff members, asserting that hate would not prevail.

These disturbing events occurred amidst a backdrop of legislative actions in Florida that have limited LGBTQ+ rights. Governor Ron DeSantis signed four bills that curtailed these rights, including measures that prohibit transgender individuals from using public facilities corresponding to their gender identity and impose restrictions on drag performances in front of children. Teachers in Florida also reported taking actions such as removing certain books from classrooms and refraining from establishing LGBTQ+ clubs due to the “Don’t Say Gay” law, which prevents discussions about sexual orientation and gender identity in specific grade levels.
