CBI gets Sheikh Shahjahan, Bengal Police hands over custody after court order

The West Bengal Police handed over Sheikh Shahjahan to CBI after the probe agency accused Bengal CID of not complying with the High Court’s order.

The West Bengal Police Handed over the custody of suspended Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan to the CBI after a fresh directive by the Calcutta High Court.

The CBI will also take over the case of an attack on Enforcement Directorate officers at Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district on January 5.

The attack happened when the ED officers went to Sheikh Shahjahan’s house in Sandeshkhali for a raid in connection with the alleged multi-crore ration distribution scam. Shahjahan is accused of allegedly instigating the mob to attack the ED officials.

Before his arrest, Sheikh Shahjahan was taken for a medical examination at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata.

Earlier in the day, the CBI reached the Calcutta High Court, accusing the Bengal Police of not handing over the custody of the suspended TMC leader despite the court’s Tuesday order.

On Tuesday, the Calcutta High Court called the Bengal Police “totally biased” and ordered that the investigation into the attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials at Sandeshkhali in January be transferred to the CBI.

Sheikh Shahjahan was arrested on February 29 in connection with the case of an attack on ED officials. He was arrested after being on the run for 55 days.
