DeVito’s breakout film role was in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest alongside Jack Nicholson and his Taxi co-star Christopher Lloyd. Taxi ended up being his big break. The role of Louie the dispatcher gave him a broad audience and helped him secure a place in television history.

Taxi went through a lot of changes and evolution during its early production. Nearly every actor was cast in a different role than they ended up playing. DeVito, however, was the first actor to be hired on to the series. The production team always knew that he was perfect for the part.

DeVito might be known for his short stature but his giant personality is what helped him land the iconic role. He walked into the audition with confidence and attitude and walked out with a job. Aspiring actors could learn a lot from DeVito’s style and approach.

Taxi was a massive success. It ended up winning 18 Emmy awards during its 5-year run. DeVito himself personally took one of those homes, and that was only the beginning of his celebrated and acclaimed career. Flash forward nearly a half-century later to today and he’s still making us laugh.
