As President Joe Biden prepares to visit Israel and Jordan, the humanitarian crisis continues to build in Gaza as trucks with water, food, generator fuel and other aid have been stuck in Egypt for days while trapped civilians are desperate to get out at the Rafah border crossing with Egypt. The Israel-Hamas war has killed more than 4,100 people on both sides and forced more than 1 million Gazans to flee their homes ahead of an impending Israeli invasion. |

The Pentagon reportedly ordered about 2,000 U.S. troops to prepare for deployment to countries near Israel in case they're needed to provide Israel with medical support, security and other non-combat assistance. Elsewhere, the head of Israel's equivalent of the FBI said he takes responsibility for failing to prevent Hamas from attacking southern Israel, and he wants an investigation into why the agency mistakenly believed an attack would be much smaller. |

Rep. Jim Jordan could become House speaker this afternoon when the chamber holds a floor vote. Allies of former President Donald Trump, who has endorsed Jordan, have spent days pressuring holdouts to back the combative co-founder of the far-right Freedom Caucus. Democrats have condemned the potential election of Jordan, who helped Trump push false claims of election fraud and defied a subpoena to testify about the Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021. |

Speaking of the former president, the federal district judge overseeing his election subversion trial ordered him to stop making statements targeting prosecutors, possible witnesses and the judge's staff. A Trump lawyer condemned the decision as censorship, but Judge Tanya Chutkan said "no other criminal defendant" would be allowed to mount a "smear campaign" that interferes with the case. Trump's statements could inspire supporters to become violent, she said.
Trump making statements that inspire his supporters to become violent? Like that would ever happen. |

The drugstore chain, heavy in debt and facing lawsuits for how it prescribed opioids, filed for bankruptcy protection. Unlike larger rivals such as CVS, Rite Aid has not branched into healthcare services that could have buoyed its business as revenues fell from a decline in prescription reimbursements and Covid-19 tests and vaccines. |

A railroad bridge near Pueblo, Colo., collapsed Sunday onto a semi-trailer truck, killing its driver, while a derailed train of coal cars fell onto the interstate. Investigators are trying to learn what happened first: The train derailing, the bridge collapsing or the truck becoming stuck underneath the bridge. |

The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, Italy, will not host the downhill sliding sports of bobsled, luge and skeleton, because organizers said it would cost too much to build the downhill track needed for the games. Tracks in Austria and Switzerland, 100 and 200 miles away, might be used instead, the first time Winter Olympics events would be held outside the host nation. Rude to treat the athletes like a bunch of lugers. |
