President Joe Biden will build 20 miles of border wall in South Texas, continuing a key policy of former President Donald Trump and breaking a campaign promise to build "not another foot" during his presidency. The administration also said it would begin deporting some Venezuelans who attempt to enter the U.S. as arrivals continue to surge.

Donald Trump has officially backed ally Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio to succeed Kevin McCarthy as House speaker. The former president declared on his Truth Social site: "He will be a GREAT Speaker of the House, & has my Complete & Total Endorsement!" The other announced speaker candidate is Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, who has also worked with Trump in the past.

The average interest rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage hit 7.49% this week, its highest level since December 2000. If you borrowed at that rate to buy a house at the median price of $416,000, you would pay $2,905 per month — $1,227 per month more than your monthly payment of $1,678 if you had bought the house in December 2021, when the average rate bottomed out at 2.66%, according to Bankrate.com.

Narges Mohammadi, an imprisoned activist in Iran, has been awarded this year's Nobel Peace Prize. "She fights for women against systematic discrimination and oppression," said Berit Reiss-Andersen, the chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Mohammadi is no stranger to imprisonment; her latest arrest came last November when she attended a memorial for a protest victim.

A 43-year-old man with a loaded, holstered handgun was arrested Wednesday afternoon for trying to enter the office of Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers. Hours after he was released, the man returned to the state Capitol with an assault rifle, demanding to see him. He was arrested again.

France is trying to reassure folks that bedbugs are not taking over with barely nine months until Paris hosts the summer Olympics. Videos of bugs on public transit have spread fear of the apple-seed-sized pests, but dozens of reports on trains and buses have been unfounded, according to the country's transport minister.

Fired Northwestern University football coach Pat Fitzgerald is suing the school for $130 million over what he alleges is wrongful termination. Fitzgerald was sacked in July after revelations of widespread hazing and racism in the football program, which he led for 17 years. Athletes in other sports at NU have since come forward with more stories of mistreatment. 

Saturday Night Live is back this weekend for the first time since May, when the Writers Guild of America went on strike over pay and precarious work. SNL alum Pete Davidson, the last scheduled host before the strike, will host the first episode back (that's him below, in case you're wondering); Bad Bunny will play host and musical guest the following week.

New this weekend: More adventures of lovably hapless pirates in Our Flag Means Death, and an inside-the-marriage docuseries of David and Victoria Beckham. In the throwback department, it's never a bad time to revisit The Muppets or the madcap hijinks of the man known as Beast Mode (aka Super Bowl champion Marshawn Lynch).

One thing we love: Friends visiting from out of town. ❤️

One thing we hate: We can't find the cord that powers our SAD lamp, which we will be needing very soon.
