The United Auto Workers is preparing to strike at some Ford, General Motors and Stellantis factories if automakers don't move closer to its demands for pay raises and restoration of benefits — like reinstituting pensions — the union gave up during leaner times. Detroit's Big Three have never faced a simultaneous strike by the UAW, which represents 146,000 workers, and union President Shawn Fain said the strike could expand if companies "continue to give us insulting offers." |

A federal judge ruled against the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA), which prevents the deportation of hundreds of thousands of immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. The legal backstory is complicated, but the ruling continues to block the program from accepting new applicants and almost guarantees the Supreme Court will have the final say. |

4. INFLATION UP (AND DOWN) |
Rising Gas Prices drove up inflation last month*, but core inflation — which leaves out fluctuating food and gas prices — actually fell a little bit. The drop from 4.7% in July to 4.3% in August is smaller than declines in months, though, which means inflation will take longer to reach the Federal Reserve's goal of 2%. The news is positive enough that most experts are still expecting the Fed to leave rates unchanged at its meeting next week.
*That pun was an accident, we swear. |

A coalition of 40 historically Black colleges and universities received a $124 million gift to boost the schools' enrollment, graduation and job prospects. The philanthropy Blue Meridian Partners has now given about $200 million to the HBCU Transformation Project since 2020, when private giving to HBCUs started rising in response to the police murder of George Floyd and the risk that some schools wouldn't financially survive the Covid-19 pandemic. |

Hundreds of Milwaukee drinkers took up a bar on its offer of a free tab if the New York Jets — the new home of former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers — lost their season opener on Monday Night Football. When Rodgers was injured just four plays into the game, patrons started ordering more, thinking a night of free booze was on the house — but then the Jets won in overtime. The duly paid tabs gave Jack's American Pub one of its biggest nights of the year. Talk about a buzzkill. |
