Hurricane force winds are expected in Florida as soon as tonight ahead of Hurricane Idalia's landfall, which is expected by tomorrow. The storm is forecast to strengthen to a Category 3 storm on its way from Cuba. Ahead of the first storm to hit the state this hurricane season, Gov. Ron DeSantis issued an expanded state of emergency that covers two-thirds of the state's counties, including parts of both its Gulf and Atlantic coasts. |

In response to a lawsuit from Maui County, Hawaiian Electric is blaming county firefighters for the blaze that has killed at least 115 people and destroyed the town of Lahaina. The utility admitted that its power lines probably caused a fire on Aug. 8 but said firefighters had declared it "100% contained." Hawaiian Electric said it shut off power more than six hours before a second, deadly fire broke out. |

On March 5, Republicans in 14 states will choose their presidential nominee. The day before, former President Donald Trump is scheduled to begin his federal trial for trying to block the certification of his 2020 loss. The party faithful have only grown stronger in their support since Trump's four indictments, so this may be a blessing for his desired rematch with President Joe Biden. FOR NOW: Trump (or at least his lawyers) have to return to Atlanta a week from tomorrow to enter his plea on charges of conspiring to overturn Georgia's vote for Biden in 2020. The 18 other defendants in that case, including Rudy Giuliani and then presidential chief of staff Mark Meadows, who asked a judge yesterday to move the case to federal court, will also be arraigned. |

American Airlines was fined $4.1 million for breaking a decade-old federal rule against keeping passengers on idle planes for more than three hours without the chance to deplane. It happened on 43 flights from 2018 through 2021, involving 5,821 passengers, according to a Transportation Department statement. Half of the fine was waived because American had compensated delayed passengers. Well well well, who's paying the fees now?

Police respond to the vast majority of mental health crises in the U.S., but at least 14 of the largest 20 U.S. cities are hosting or starting programs that divert some calls to civilians including clinicians (such as social workers) and emergency medical responders. Protests against police violence in 2020 pushed more cities to try non-police responses to mental health calls. |

Voice Assistants by Apple (Siri), Google, Amazon (Alexa) and Microsoft could help the four in five U.S. residents not CPR-certified to provide immediate help that might save a life. Unfortunately, they're more likely to say something like, "Hmm, I don't know that one," according to a new study. The tech industry should partner with medical experts to provide standard CPR instructions across all voice assistants, says study coauthor Dr. Adam Landman. |

8. CHOP AN ONION WITHOUT CRYING |
The only tears you're going to have after watching chef Joshua Resnick demonstrate how to properly chop an onion are tears of joy, because the way you move the knife through that allium can reduce the amount of stinging moisture it releases. He also showed us how to cut a red pepper without getting seeds everywhere and how to slice an avocado without slicing your hand. |
