Seven hundred miles north of Jacksonville, thousands gathered to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington, where the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., gave his historic "I Have a Dream" speech. Marsha Dean Phelts, 79, traveled from her home outside Jacksonville for the event. "It was more fired up then," she said of the 1963 rally, "but the things we were asking for and needing, we still need them today." |

An Associated Press review of video and photos from this month's Maui wildfires found that Hawaiian Electric Co.'s old, wooden utility poles, which connected uninsulated power lines, leaned over rows of dry grass that would later erupt in wildfires when high winds blew through the island. Had the company updated its poles to a national standard set in 2002, they might not have fallen, and had it insulated the power cables, they would not have sparked and caused fires, experts told the AP. |

Homebuyers from the cities are looking for more space for their dollar and those in farther-flung suburbs are looking for closer commutes to the city center, said Danielle Hale, chief economist at Realtor.com. That has made first-ring suburbs some of the hottest areas in the current housing market, she said, and none so much as an unassuming city of about 35,000 in central Ohio. |

The 26-year-old gymnast won a record eighth U.S. all-around championship a full decade after winning her first. Biles, the most decorated American woman ever in U.S. gymnastics, only rejoined competition three weeks ago following a two-year hiatus prompted by her withdrawal from the Tokyo Olympics to focus on her mental health. She is widely anticipated to return to the 2024 games in Paris. |
