Former President Donald Trump surrendered to Fulton County, Ga., authorities on charges that he tried to overturn the state's 2020 presidential election result. His scowling mugshot quickly went viral, with Trump posting it on his X account (formerly known as Twitter) - his first post on the platform in more than two years. District Attorney Fani Willis and Trump's team are still wrangling over a trial date; Willis initially proposed March, but the Trump's attorney proposed some time after the presidential election.
Correction: A caption in Thursday's newsletter said Rudy Giuliani turned himself into authorities on Thursday. He actually turned himself in on Wednesday. |

How much longer will the Federal Reserve keep raising interest rates? Investors will be watching for clues when Fed Chair Jerome Powell speaks at the global gathering of central bankers and economists in Jackson Hole, Wyo today. So far, raising rates to a 22-year high has not pushed the economy to recession — unemployment is low and job growth relatively high even as inflation has fallen from a peak of 9.1% in June 2022 to 3.2% last month — but high borrowing costs have depressed home sales and new construction. Jackson Hole's median home sale was $3.6 million last year. The perfect setting to remind central bankers how their decisions affect regular people. |

3. POWER, VIOLENCE, SECRECY |
The misdemeanor assault and battery conviction of a CIA officer trainee has put a spotlight on allegations that sexual misconduct at at the spy agency "is a gigantic problem." In recent months, more than two dozen women have told Congress that they have been sexually assaulted, touched against their will, or had men imply violence or threaten their career unless the woman had sex with them. |

When the head of Spain's soccer federation kissed a Spanish player on her mouth, without her consent, at the medal ceremony for the Women's World Cup, did he violate global soccer's code of conduct or bring the sport into disrepute? What about when he grabbed his crotch as a gesture of victory while a 16-year-old stood nearby? As this newsletter goes to press, Luis Rubiales is in an emergency meeting and media reports say he will step down, a day after FIFA announced an investigation. We'll update the link with the latest info when we get the details of the meeting. "Kissing people without their consent is bad. His punishment is [fill in the blank]." There — saved you some time, FIFA! |

The iconic seasonal beverage went on sale yesterday for the 20th year. The legions who love the syrupy mixture infused with cinnamon, nutmeg and clove may seem matched by the loathing of its detractors, but the numbers do not lie: the panoply of pumpkin spice products inspired by Starbucks has grown 42% since 2019 to $802.5 million. It's PSL's world. We're just living in it.

Remember way back in 2018, when we learned that Facebook gave a data mining firm access to info on as many as 87 million people? And how that data firm — Cambridge Analytica — allegedly used it to manipulate voters to help Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign? Tonight is the deadline to apply for a piece of the $725 million payment made by Meta, Facebook's parent company, to settle a lawsuit about it. Anyone in the U.S. who had an account between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022, is eligible. We don't know what each person stands to get. |

7. GROCERY-LIFTING CHAMPION |
Few people need or want to look like Miss. or Mr. Universe, but many of us probably would like being able to more easily (and less sweatily) lug grocery bags out of the trunk or into the train. These three exercises, which you can do with a dumbbell or kettlebell at home, help you strengthen the muscles you use to push and pull — which end up being pretty important for a lot of daily tasks. |

Is there such thing as a true "staycation," or are we deluding ourselves until we can enjoy a proper getaway? Skeptics in the New York City area might check out the historic TWA Hotel and lounge at JFK Airport, which preserves the 1960s jet-set chic of the former airport terminal. Locals and citybound visitors can check in for an afternoon at the pool before a midcentury modern dinner and a Jetsons sleepover. |

It's going to be a big autumn for books about famous people written by those same famous people. Britney Spears' The Woman in Me is getting the most attention, but the decades-long wait for Barbra Streisand's My Name Is Barbra probably makes it the most anticipated by fans. Check out this fall books roundup for more forthcoming tell-alls and this fall's buzzed-about titles in fiction, poetry, history and more. |

10. DOLPHIN RESCUE CENTER |
A new intensive care unit for dolphins and porpoises will open by the end of August in Cape Cod, Mass., which has more mass strandings of dolphins than anywhere in the world. In the last five years, workers with the International Fund for Animal Welfare have responded to more than 400 stranded marine mammals, including whales, but they're often in such stress, shock and states of dehydration that treatment on the scene isn't enough. The new Dolphin Rescue Center will allow dolphins and porpoises to recover for several days before being released. |

We hope you're not in the mood for cinéma vérité or a poignant drama this weekend, because we're recommending lighter fare: bat mitzvah shenanigans, a YouTuber takes his punches, and a podcast delighting in the weirdness of medieval times (the era, not the chain of family dinner theaters). |
One thing we love: Fruit pop molds. Blend some fruit, pour it in, wait a few hours, enjoy a popsicle while feeling like a sophisticated adult — because 100% fruit. One thing we hate: Presidential debates that don't enforce time limits. (Just shut off their mics!) One thing we ate: Trader Joe's spinach and cashew ravioli. Tasted great and it hasn't been recalled like some other TJ's items 🤞 |

mail is cool because 99% of the time it's like a J.c. penney catalogue for a previous tenant and 1% of the time it's something you'll go to jail for if you don't look at —@ftmensch
