Former President Donald Trump is expected to turn himself in to authorities in Atlanta today, where he will be booked on charges related to trying to overthrow his 2020 election loss in Georgia. His bond is expected to be set at $200,000 and he will be barred from intimidating witnesses and others involved in the case, including on social media, although that condition hasn't stopped him before. And yes, there will probably be a mug shot. Several of his other associates, including his attorney Rudy Giuliani, have already turned themselves in this week; the deadline is noon Friday. |

While former President Donald Trump was "the elephant not in the room" at the first Republican primary debate, the vacuum was filled not by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis but by Vivek Ramaswamy, the 38-year-old businessman who has been creeping up to match DeSantis for second place in some polls. Ramaswamy's Trump-like attacks on other candidates — most notably former Vice President Mike Pence — drew them into tit-for-tats which gave the upstart additional airtime. |
Ramaswamy earned more airtime than DeSantis with quick delivery and jabs at other candidates. |

The Russian mercenary leader who led a one-day rebellion against the Russian military in June was apparently killed, along with nine others, in a suspicious plane crash north of Moscow. Soldiers in Prigozhin's Wagner Group were key to Russia's war on Ukraine until the mutiny. Russian president Vladimir Putin called Prigozhin's actions a "stab in the back" that he would avenge, but had allowed him to head to Belarus at the time, rather than arrest him. |

South Carolina's all-male Supreme Court, the only one in the country without a woman justice, upheld the state's new ban on abortions after the sixth week of a pregnancy, when many women don't even know they're pregnant. The same court court (with different judges) struck down a similar ban in January. Justice Kaye Hearn, then the sole woman on the court, wrote the majority opinion. Weeks later, she reached the mandatory retirement age and was replaced. "Bros rule. We mean, so ruled."

Children's privacy groups said YouTube violated federal law against serving kids personalized ads and have asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Google, its parent company. Google said its policy doesn't let advertisers "directly target" kids' videos, but one group said they tested out YouTube's ad platform and were allowed to target only "made for kids" channels. |

8. CATCH YA LATER, IRRIGATOR |
A future with more heat waves and droughts could push more farmers to buy expensive irrigation equipment, especially in the western U.S. But much of the region already has scarce water supplies. To protect crops and save water, the federal government could expand insurance and other subsidies for wheat, sorghum and other plants that can handle drought better than the two biggest crops: corn and soybeans |

If you remember when the Soviet Union fell, you should probably be getting your eyes checked each year. Around the age of 40, the lens in our eye starts to lose focus at closer distances, said optometrist Dr. Jacquelyn Guida. So don't wait until you can't read your phone without using a selfie stick. |

… was yesterday, at least officially. It's okay if you missed it, though: There are ways to celebrate it belatedly by finding a good deal for your next trip. |
