| | While local and federal agencies have come under fire for their response to the deadly fires that tore through Hawaii, Joe Biden has been criticised by Republicans for going on holiday. Now, 13 days after a blaze destroyed the town of Lahaina, the US president and First Lady Jill Biden have been surveying the charred ruins. After taking an aerial tour, Mr Biden described the devastation as “overwhelming”. Many more are just exhausted, after 18 months fighting off Russia's full-scale invasion. But some men don't want to fight. Thousands have left the country, sometimes after bribing officials, and others are finding ways of dodging recruitment officers, who in turn have been accused of increasingly heavy-handed tactics.
