Los Angeles closed its school buildings and San Diego pushed the first day of school to Tuesday after Tropical Storm Hilary brought mudslides and flash floods to Southern California, the region's first tropical storm in 84 years. Meanwhile, the South Central U.S. was baking this weekend. Dallas and Jackson, Miss., broke their respective daily records with high temperatures of 109 and 104 degrees. |

Former President Donald Trump will skip the first GOP presidential primary debate, set for Wednesday, and may forgo all of them. For months he has said there's little upside to debating rivals who poll so far below him. "The public knows who I am & what a successful Presidency I had," he wrote on Truth Social. Invoking popular support after losing the popular vote twice is … quite a move. |

A man fatally shot a woman in front of her clothing boutique Friday night after he disparaged the LGBTQ+ Pride Flag she flew outside the Southern California store. The unidentified shooter was killed by police in a confrontation sometime later. More Pride flags have been destroyed or stolen around the country as online hate groups organize "challenges'' to destroy them, according to a June USA Today investigation. |

We need to start planning for when the glaciers are gone, according to a new study. It found that one-fourth to one-half or even more of them, not counting Antarctica or Greenland, will melt by 2100. That means preparing for more floods and finding alternative water sources for farms that rely on them to irrigate crops. |

The average U.S. family with school-age kids will spend $890 on back-to-school supplies, according to the National Retail Federation, but families can save some of that money. Shopping expert Trae Bodge recommends taking advantage of tax holidays in your state (and nearby ones) and the last-minute sales retailers are putting on to make sure they sell enough. And if you can convince your kid, buy used clothes and electronics. |

University athletic departments and collegiate sports conferences are paying millions of dollars for bet-tracking services to make sure that student-athletes, coaches and staff aren't gambling in violation of school and NCAA rules and state laws. Five years after the Supreme Court ruled that states could legalize sports betting, a survey says two-thirds of 18- to 22-year-olds living on a college campus said they had bet on sports. |

10. OETZI WHERE YOU'RE FROM |
Scientists have uncovered more about the roots of Oetzi the Iceman, one the oldest humans found mummified by a glacier. The new study determined that Oetzi, whose body was found in 1991 by hikers in the Italian Alps, was mostly descended from farmers in present-day Turkey and probably lived in an isolated group in the mountains. He was less hairy and pale than previously thought and had an increased risk of obesity and diabetes. RIP Oetzi, your posture suggests you would have loved viral TikTok dances. |

Today is the start of National Animal Foster Appreciation Week, put on by the ASPCA to raise awareness of how big of a difference you can make in a cat's or a dog's life by giving them a safe, stable, loving home until they're adopted. Many shelters are especially in need of people to foster kittens in the warm months, said the ASPCA's Gemma Smith, who shared how to learn more about fostering (or adopting) a cute little kitten like Churro! |
