The first signs of post-fire recovery are emerging in Maui, where some schools and major roads are reopening a week after devastating wildfires. Of course, thousands of residents are living with friends or in shelters or rentals, and power and phone service is unreliable. Then there are the efforts to identify the more than 100 people who died — only a handful have been ID'd so far — and to search for additional victims. President Joe Biden will visit the island Monday. |

A new expert analysis contradicts Alec Baldwin's claim that he did not pull the trigger of the prop gun containing a live round, fatally injuring Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins nearly two years ago. The report said it's possible that Baldwin pulled the trigger before he pulled back the gun's hammer, in which case releasing the hammer would have the same effect as pulling the trigger. |

North Korea has officially confirmed that it is detaining Pvt. Travis King, a soldier stationed in South Korea who ran across the border last month instead of returning to the U.S. for military discipline. The government's news agency said that King illegally entered the country to escape racial discrimination in the Army. "This is 100% North Korean propaganda in its element," said one observer. "As for King's release, his fate rests in North Korea's hands." |

Three people have died this summer in New York and Connecticut, and a fourth fell ill, after they were infected with Vibrio vulnificus, a bacteria found in seawater and raw shellfish. New York's health commissioner urged immunocompromised people to avoid eating raw or undercooked shellfish and for anyone to avoid swimming in warm seawater if they have open wounds, which caused two of the cases in Connecticut. |

Waiting lists for gender-affirming healthcare are growing in states that have laws or executive orders protecting it for transgender minors from out of state. Providers and advocates in those 12 states and Washington, D.C., say that the freedom to seek that care is hollow if a child has to wait more than a year for an appointment. Research shows that more than 89,000 trans 13- to 17-year-olds live in 20 states that have restricted or banned gender-affirming healthcare. |

A pig's kidney transplanted into a brain-dead man at New York University has continued to work normally more than a month later, the longest stretch that one has survived. Last year, a man with a terminal illness lived for two months after receiving a transplanted pig heart. Researchers hope these experiments will pave the way for pigs to save thousands of people who die each year waiting for an organ donation. |

Aldi is continuing its U.S. expansion with plans to buy 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys supermarkets. The discount grocer's relatively small stores defy the broader trend of grocery shopping at big-box stores like Walmart, which alone controls 25% of U.S. grocery sales. At the same time, its announcement is part of a wave of supermarket consolidation, following last fall's proposed merger of Kroger and Albertsons. They'll buy aldi stores you'd like to sell. |

Remember the first time you saw someone pay for something by booping their iPhone on a card reader? Pretty soon, that's going to look like a clerk sliding one of those old shuck-shuck machines over a credit card. Like, we're talking about being able to buy something just by looking at it. "Sorry, honey, I looked too long and accidentally bought a case of Samuel Adams Wicked Crazy." |

The winner of the Women's World Cup final, set for Sunday, will make history either way — neither England nor Spain has won it. The Spanish men won their last (and only) World Cup in 2010, but England is even hungrier: The birthplace of football* hasn't brought the cup home in 57 years. *Out of respect, we won't call it soccer just this once. |
