The Lagos commissioner disputes the claim that N40 million is needed to reopen Ladipo market.

The denial of the request for traders at Ladipo Market to pay N40 million before its reopening has been made by Tokunbo Wahab, the commissioner for environment and water resources in Lagos State.

Wahab expressed his acknowledgment of the aforementioned claim on a social media platform, refuting the assertion that he had solicited the funds.

The Lagos State administration has taken the decision to seal Ladipo Market, along with other markets, as a result of several environmental violations.

On the 9th of October, 2023, the Lagos State Government initiated the reopening of four markets, namely Oyingbo, Alamutu Ologede, and Ile Epo.

The offenses included careless disposal of waste, unsanitary premises, and failure to pay waste bills, among other violations.

According to Wahab's findings, the markets were reopened subsequent to complete adherence to the necessary conditions.

Nevertheless, the Ladipo market was not among the markets that were reopened.

The Commissioner purportedly made a request for the traders to pay a sum of N40 million in order for the reopening to occur.

In his commentary on the study, Wahab issued a cautionary statement advising individuals to exercise caution and avoid becoming targets of fraudulent activities.

Unless there is an outstanding debt owed to the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) for services provided, it is not necessary to offer any form of monetary compensation (bribe) to any official in order to get your facility or market reopened. The individual expressed a plea to refrain from becoming a target of fraudulent activities, as indicated in his communication on the X platform.

The individual expressed that the commitment to promoting a more environmentally clean and secure setting aligns with the agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's administration, known as T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda.
