Northern CAN and others ask the FG to address the damage of farmlands by herders.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the nineteen Northern states and Abuja has urged the Federal Government to implement decisive measures against armed Fulani herders who engage in the destruction of crops through grazing on farmlands or confiscating farmers' produce in various regions of the nation.

In a communiqué released following a meeting in Kaduna, and endorsed by Chaplain Gilbert Jechonia, the Public Relations Officer (PRO), the association has urged the government to Implement Decisive Measures against Armed Fulani Herders who engage in the destruction of crops through grazing on farmlands or deliberately cutting off crops. This issue is particularly prevalent in Plateau, Benue, Taraba states, Southern Kaduna, and various other regions within the country.

The text commends the endeavors of Security Agencies in combatting insurgency and banditry, which have had detrimental effects on the nation's economy. It also urges the Federal Government to continue providing resources and assistance to these security agencies in order to effectively suppress criminal activities.

The report indicated that the attacks have resulted in widespread poverty and food insecurity in the region, leading to significant challenges for Nigerians in meeting their basic needs. Furthermore, it highlights the detrimental impact of the prevailing economic conditions on companies, resulting in their closure, while the high levels of unemployment have driven many young individuals towards engaging in criminal activities.

The organization urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the 36 governors to fulfill the aspirations of the Nigerian populace by effectively tackling the prevailing economic and social challenges. Additionally, it emphasized the importance of adopting an inclusive governance approach and ensuring equitable distribution of developmental initiatives, thereby fostering a sense of inclusivity and belonging among all regions within the country or states.

The statement suggests that the President should exert maximum effort in resolving the food issue, as it asserts that Nigerians are experiencing hardship due to the elimination of the petrol subsidy.

The current state of affairs has led to a significant deterioration in the quality of life for a substantial portion of the impoverished population, as the costs associated with basic necessities such as food, transportation, and other critical commodities have escalated to levels that are unattainable for many individuals. The prices are experiencing a daily upward trend.

During the discussion regarding the distribution of palliatives, the participants recommended that the government implement more tangible and practical approaches to tackle the issue, rather than relying on an improvised plan that may only result in benefiting a limited number of patients.
