STORY:

In the very first scene: Sméagol (Andy Serkis) and his friend Déagol (Thomas Robins) are shown fishing in the River Anduin near the Gladden Fields in the north of Middle Earth in a flashback scene. Déagol is hauled into the stream by a strong catch and finds the One Ring shining in the waterway bed. He picks it up and emerges from the water. Sméagol sees him caressing it and as the two of them capitulate to the Ring's power they start to squabble.

Sméagol requests the Ring, saying that it's his birthday and it ought to be his present. The quarrel transforms into a battle; Sméagol frees the Ring from Déagol's clenched fist and strangles his friend with his own hands. Sméagol is excluded from his local area and driven away. Sméagol takes solace in his love for the Ring, which slowly tortures his mind as he suffers greatly from loneliness and shame. He takes lone shelter in caves underneath the mountains, where affected by the Ring he resides to an exceptionally extraordinary age. He wanes into a slouched, stealthy, sneaking animal known by the terrible commotion he makes in his throat - - "Gollum."

Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) are currently resting in an alcove on the outskirts of Mordor. Sam wakes up to discover that his master has not gone to sleep. The days are developing hazier the nearer they get to Minas Morgul and Mordor. Gollum appears and encourages them to continue.

Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), Gimli (John Rhys-Davies), Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Théoden (Bernard Hill), and Éomer (Karl Urban) travel to Isengard via the forest of Fangorn. There, they meet Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd), who are feasting They track down Treebeard at the pinnacle of Orthanc in the focal point of Isengard, where Saruman (Christopher Lee) has been caught. Gimli wants to kill Saruman, but Gandalf says that the wizard no longer has power and won't be a threat. They see Saruman for the first time. Gandalf destroys Saruman's power by shattering his staff. He is stabbed by Grima (Brad Dourif), who is still with him. Saruman falls to his death on the spikes of a large waterwheel after Legolas fires an arrow at Grima. As they are talking, Pippin sees Saruman's palantír among the debris and is enchanted by it, yet Gandalf rapidly takes it from him and conceals in under his shroud.

The group travels by train to Edoras, where King Théoden has planned a lavish banquet to "hail the victorious dead" from the Battle of the Hornburg. There, Éowyn (Miranda Otto), who is affectionate toward Aragorn, is noticed by Théoden; He expresses his happiness for her, citing Aragorn's honorable character and role in the victory at Helm's Deep. Gandalf communicates to Aragorn his interests over the mission. He is instructed by Aragorn to put his faith in what his heart tells him—that Frodo is still alive. Frodo and Sam are asleep when Gollum wakes up in the night and moves to one side to mutter to himself. His shrewd half detects a few uncertainty in Sméagol and demands that on the off chance that he can kill once (like he killed Déagol for the ring) he can rehash it. Gollum then, at that point, starts driving Sméagol through their arrangement, to convey the hobbits into the grip of Shelob in Cirith Ungol, after which the Ring can be recovered. Sam hears the discussion and beats Gollum for his foul play. Frodo mediates, expressing that as their aide Gollum is vital for their mission. Sam scowls as Gollum streaks him an insidious grin while Frodo's back is turned.

That very evening back in Edoras, Pippin's interest gets the better of him; He investigates it after freeing a slumbering Gandalf from the palantr. Pippin sees a dream of a white tree in a stone patio set burning, yet in doing so he is gotten by Sauron and submitted to mental torment and addressing. Aragorn attempts to save him, momentarily presenting himself to Sauron. When Pippin recovers from his ordeal, it turns out that he didn't tell Sauron where the Ring was. From Pippin's vision of the White Tree, Gandalf reasons that Sauron is currently moving to go after the incomparable Gondorian city of Minas Tirith and he heads out to send advance notice, taking Pippin with him, in case his desire to investigate the palantír (left presently in Aragorn's keeping) get back once more.

Arwen (Liv Tyler) has a vision of Eldarion (Sadwyn Brophy), the son she will have with Aragorn, as she leaves Rivendell to travel to the Undying Lands. She understands that her dad misled her when he said she and Aragorn had no future together. She gets back to Rivendell and persuades Elrond (Hugo Winding around) that having neglected the existence of the Eldar, she can't leave Aragorn now. She lets her dad know that as predicted, an opportunity to reforge Narsil has come. The true heir of Isildur is the bearer of Narsil, Elendil's sword, which he used to remove the One Ring from Sauron's hand.

Gandalf and Pippin show up at Minas Tirith, City of Rulers, that was worked out of the stone of Mindolluin. There Pippin perceives the White Tree as they go to track down the Steward Denethor (John Honorable). They approach him as he grieves over Boromir (Sean Bean), his child. Pippin swears steadfastness to him in reward for Boromir's penance. Denethor doesn't seem to be doing anything to protect the city from Sauron because he is so distraught.

Frodo, Sam, and Gollum arrive at Minas Morgul in the meantime. They find the Winding Stair, which leads to the pass of Cirith Ungol, hidden in the cliffs surrounding the cursed city. They are wary of the enemies. The city's doors open at that exact moment, and the Nazgûl leader, the Witch-king of Angmar, sends an enormous Orc army from his hideout to start the war. As a bolt of lightning rises from the door opening, Gandalf and Pippin witness the army's outpouring. Pippin sets off the first of the beacon signals for Edoras at Gandalf's request, notifying Théoden, Aragorn, and the other Rohirrim to gather at Dunharrow and travel to Minas Tirith from there. Éowyn insists that she rides only to watch them leave and that the men have found their captain in Aragorn, despite the fact that Aragorn notices that she is girt with a sword as they leave Edoras.

The Morgul armed force crosses Anduin at Osgiliath in stopgap boats and connects with the Gondorian contingent (lead by Boromir's sibling Faramir (David Wenham)) in fight. The orcs demonstrate areas of strength for excessively drive the Gondorians out of Osgiliath; The Nazgûl are pursuing Faramir and his few remaining men as they flee to Minas Tirith. Gandalf, braving to meet the withdrawing men, wards them off, saving Faramir. Upon his appearance, Faramir (who met Frodo, Sam, and Gollum in Ithilien not long before they set out toward the mountain pass into Mordor) tells Gandalf of the perilous course Gollum is taking Frodo and Sam on, persuading Gandalf of Gollum's bad form.

The hobbits, lead by Gollum, are battling to climb the very steep steps. Gollum connects and identifies with Frodo, saying that he figures out his torment. Frodo is also poisoned by Gollum in response to Sam's threat to steal the Ring.

The Witch-king tells his captain to "send forth all legions" and wipe out Minas Tirith's population in the captured Osgiliath, promising that he will "break" Gandalf himself. Denethor manipulates Faramir into taking a doomed ride to reclaim the city after being dissatisfied with his failed defense of Osgiliath.

Gollum keeps pitting the hobbits against each other, this time by accusing Sam of eating their food supplies. Frodo, in his misled state, is dubious of Sam and orders him back home while Sam, attempting to be useful, offers to convey the Ring, consequently satisfying Gollum's cleverness expectation. While Pippin sings for Denethor, who is unconcerned about eating his lunch, Faramir rides head-on into the orcs' arrows. Faramir's assault falls flat and Faramir is hauled back by his pony in a demise like extreme lethargies. At the weapon-take at Dunharrow, a hooded figure gradually rides on a white pony along the twisting street to the settlement in the slopes. Aragorn recognizes the figure as Elrond. He gives Aragorn his inheritance - - the recently reforged blade Narsil, presently named Anduril, Fire of the West. He asks Aragorn to utilize this sword to review the Dead Men of Dunharrow and utilize their faithfulness to the beneficiary of Isildur (for example Aragorn) to stop the assault of the Corsairs' boats, which are now cruising from the south.

Together with Legolas and Gimli, Aragorn accepts this advice and rides that very night into the Dimholt. A tearful Éowyn approaches Aragorn as he is getting ready to leave and begs him not to, declaring her love for him. However, Aragorn also rejects Éowyn's love because he is aware that Arwen has rejected Valinor's promise. Théoden rides off to war the following morning with six thousand riders, unaware that Éowyn and Merry, who were both instructed by the King to remain behind, are part of his army.

The Morgul powers, made for the most part out of Orcs, start the attack of Minas Tirith by catapulting the heads of caught detainees over the walls. Denethor sees his child Faramir and trusts him to be dead; he likewise views the could of the powers marshaled against him and at this he loses trust and his brain, requesting the Gondorians to leave their positions. Gandalf, be that as it may, steps in and debilitates Denethor, taking command of the safeguard.

The Witch-king and the other Ringwraiths on their Fell Beasts launch an attack that destroys the Gondorian trebuchets and frightens the defenders, resulting in a skirmish between Mordor's catapults and Gondorian trebuchets.

Gollum betrays Frodo to the giant spider Shelob in Cirith Ungol, but Sam returns to fight her off. Sam accepts Frodo is dead, however when Orcs from the Pinnacle of Cirith Ungol come and research, Sam hears that Frodo has just been incapacitated by Shelob's stinger.

Denethor builds a funeral pyre in Minas Tirith for himself and the unconscious Faramir because he is so devastated by losing both of his sons. Denethor is unaware that Faramir is still alive and will be burned alive by the pyre. Gandalf and Pippin show up in the Blesses and figure out how to save Faramir, yet Denethor is tossed onto the fire and as he consumes to death, he turns and sees his child blending conscious from his wounds and weariness. Down in the city, the fight goes sick with the Gondorians, as the enormous battering ram Grond breaks the doors of the city and savages pour in.

As the safeguards retreat to the upper levels of the city, the orcs creep through the roads of the lower levels, plundering, consuming and slaughtering the men of Gondor. But in the midst of the chaos, a single horn suddenly sounds, and everyone turns to the west to see the Rohan army finally arrive to the rising sun. With great success, the Rohirrim charge into the Orcs. However, the arrival of the forces of Harad and the enormous elephants known as the Mûmakil dampens their joy. The King is fatally wounded and Snowmane, his horse, is killed when the Witch-King descends on Théoden. Apparently just under the wire, the Corsairs' boats show up to help the abandoned Orcs, however Aragorn leaps off the lead transport, trailed by a multitude of the dead.

Mûmakil and the Orcs are completely destroyed, and Éowyn and Merry kill the Witch-king. Aragorn fulfills the Dead Army's oath by releasing them from their curse and allowing them to rest in peace after Théoden succumbs to his wounds.

Sam salvages Frodo from Cirith Ungol, which is for the most part void following a battle between the two groups of the Pinnacle's Orc post over Frodo's significant mithril shirt. They start the long journey through Mordor to Mount Destruction. Gandalf understands that 10,000 Orcs stand between Cirith Ungol and Mount Destruction, which will keep Frodo from arriving at his objective. Aragorn suggests that they lead the remaining soldiers to the Black Gate to deter the Eye of Sauron and divert the Orcs from Frodo's path. Frodo is carried up Mount Doom by Sam, but just as the Battle of the Morannon begins, Gollum appears and attacks them.

Instead of throwing the Ring into the flames at the Crack of Doom, Frodo puts on the Ring and vanishes from view. The Ringwraiths rush toward Mount Doom as a result of Sauron being notified of the act. Gollum renders Sam oblivious then goes after Frodo, holding onto his ring finger and gnawing it off. As Gollum celebrates at long last having recovered his Valuable, Frodo, still under the influence of the Ring's fascination, charges at Gollum. They both fall over the edge of the cliff after a brief struggle. Frodo barely clings on, his strength failing, as Gollum and the Ring fall into the fire. As the Ring finally sinks into the lava and is destroyed, Sam saves Frodo. Sauron's Eye shouts as his substance blurs before the pinnacle of Barad-dûr falls and afterward detonates, always banishing his power. The shockwave that follows consumes the remaining Sauron forces—Orcs, Ringwraiths, and all; the ground gives way beneath their feet. the Dark Entryway and Mordor are both shaken separated. Frodo and Sam become abandoned when the whole top of Mount Destruction is passed over in an enormous emission.

They express their regret at not being able to see the Shire once more amid the lava flows and Barad-dur's destruction. With the annihilation of the Nazgul, Gandalf can call upon the Birds to convey the hobbits to somewhere safe. They alert in Minas Tirith, rejoining with different individuals from the partnership, every one of them yet Boromir having endure the Conflict of the Ring.

Aragorn marries Arwen after being crowned King of the West in Minas Tirith, heralding a new era of peace. Everyone kneels down at this point to pay tribute to the little hobbits. The hobbits return to the Shire, where Sam weds Rosie Cotton (Sarah McLeod). Frodo, having wrapped up composing his entrance in the Red Book of Westmarch, is as yet experiencing the impacts of the injuries he got from the Ringwraiths at Weathertop and from Shelob.

Understanding that he won't ever find harmony in Center Earth, he chooses to go with Gandalf, Bilbo, Elrond and Galadriel to the Dark Asylums and sail to Valinor, (the Undying Terrains). Frodo gives Sam the Red Book to keep track of the years to come before they set out for the havens. The final ship to leave Middle-Earth sets sail, slowly delving into the Uttermost West along the Straight Road. Sam is left gazing at the golden sunset as Merry and Pippin leave.

In the final scene, Sam ascends the lane once more to Bag End, where he is greeted by his children and wife Rosie. Encircled by his family and with the remainder of his life in front of him, Sam murmurs and says "Indeed, I'm back." As the screen turns black, he enters and closes the door.
