Zoleka Mandela

Zoleka Mandela, born on April 9, 1980, was a vocal writer and advocate for healthcare and justice. Following the tragic loss of her 13-year-old daughter in a car accident near Johannesburg in 2010, Zoleka also became a campaigner for road safety. In addition, she experienced the heartbreak of losing a prematurely born son. In 2013, Zoleka chronicled her life in her autobiography titled “When Hope Whispers.”

During a 2016 interview with the BBC, she expressed regret that her activism only began after her grandfather’s passing. At the age of 32, Zoleka was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent extensive treatment, which included a double mastectomy.

However, the cancer resurfaced in 2016. It was during this time that she started sharing her journey with the disease on social media, raising awareness and urging others to seek medical check-ups. Last year, Zoleka disclosed that her cancer had spread to her liver, lungs, and other organs.

She was the daughter of MJ Seakamela and Zindzi Mandela, as well as the grandchild of Nelson Mandela and his second wife, Winnie Mandela. Zoleka was only 10 years old when her grandfather was released from his 27-year-long imprisonment.

Nelson Mandela, an anti-apartheid activist and the first president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, passed away in 2013 at the age of 95.
