A two-hit wonder!

Label buddies Luke Steele (The Sleepy Jackson) and Nick Littlemore (Pnau) met through an A&R man of their record label, EMI, in 2000.

After working together, helping each other’s bands on and off until 2007, they began collaborating more intensely on a new project called Empire Of The Sun.

Before the debut album was released, they dropped what was to be the title track and first big hit, Walking On A Dream (2008).

As the Tune climbed the Australian charts, they released their second big hit, We Are The People, closely followed by the album named after the first single.

Big gigs followed where the band wore outrageous outfits and used flamboyant stage props, similar to their most obvious influence, Daft Punk.

They put so much work into their live shows that it led one of the members, Littlemore, to opt out of performing live altogether, citing exhaustion.

Steele interpreted this as him leaving the band after only a year in the limelight.

As the band seemingly faded, awards started to come in for those first two singles, they got placed in TV ads, and word about the band started spreading worldwide.

Even though this brought them back together, sadly, they haven’t managed to follow it up with any material of the same calibre, but not from a lack of trying. They’ve released Ice on the Dune (2013) and Two Vines (2016). Apparently, there is a fourth album in the works.

Empire Of The Sun at times claimed that their heroes, Daft Punk, have had more success because of better marketing, not better tunes.

Whatever the reason, the band is, so far, a two-hit wonder band. But who knows, one day they might write another hit.

The latest success connected to the band is a re-recording of an old Elton John tune with Dua Lipa, Cold Heart, although this was done in the name of Pnau, Littlemore’s first band, who incidentally are signed to Elton’s management label.

To me, all this is just more evidence that at the end of the day, all that matters is great tunes; the rest is just fluff, or in the case of Empire Of The Sun, extremely flamboyant fluff.
