The Charlie Daniels Band tunes

A Country Legend!

Charlie Daniels’ first three albums were released between 1970 and 1973 under his own name.

Two things stand out here: the novelty song Uneasy Rider, which charted and was then re-released in ’76. The other is that he recorded his second album in Jimi Hendrix‘s studio, Electric Ladyland.

Once we got to 1974 and Way Down Yonder, he released everything under the name The Charlie Daniels Band. The same year he also got Fire on the Mountain, the first album of his to do well, selling Platinum.

His next four albums, Nightrider (1975), Saddle Tramp (1976), High Lonesome (1976), and Midnight Wind (1977), performed similarly as they all charted but lacked hits.

This was all about to change with Charlie Daniels’ final album of the ’70s, Million Mile Reflections (1979). This is where we find the band’s signature song, The Devil Went Down To Georgia.

With Million Mile Reflections, the band had their first #1 album, and in The Devil Went Down To Georgia, a tune that sold 1 million copies, its legacy since so much greater.

Once the ’80s rolled in, The Charlie Daniels Band capitalized on the hard groundwork they’d laid in the previous decade, and their signature song as more albums and bigger tours became commonplace.

With six studio albums released: Full Moon (1980), Windows (1982), Me and The Boys (1985), Powder Keg (1987), Homesick Heroes (1988), and Simple Man (1989). You should probably buy A Decade of Hits (1983) if you want an introduction.

Singles in the ’80s that did well include In America, Drinkin’ My Baby Goodbye, Boogie Woogie Fiddle Country Blues, and Simple Man. He also released a cover of Sweet Home Alabama in 1981.

The ’90s and beyond weren’t as great, although the band did release a further 15 albums. The 2014 release Off the Grid: Doin’ It Dylan is a tribute to Bob, with classics like Tangled Up In Blue, Mr. Tambourine Man, and Just Like A Woman.

Post the millennium, we saw Charlie Daniels inducted into various Halls of Fame, including the Country Music Hall Of Fame (2016), just four years before he passed in 2020 at the age of 83.
