Sweet Home Alabama chords, progressions, and TAB

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s classic Sweet Home Alabama is every covers band’s secret weapon, what they turn to if nothing else works!

Let’s look at the key, the Chords, progressions, and a few selected licks you simply must know to play this classic.

First of all, this tune is in the key of G, D is V, C is IV and G is I. Over the G chord, you play G major blues licks, that’s a major pentatonic with a m3rd.

In order to keep Sweet Home Alabama fun to play for years (which will undoubtedly happen, this tune escapes no one!) it’s better to keep it improvised, not memorized.

With that in mind, here’s the main riff, it’s not perfect, but rather shows you how this could be played. Learn it then try to find variations on this theme.

If you play what you see here along with the original recording, you’ll soon discover that what happens in bar 6, should actually have been the same as bar 2. As mentioned, you need to mix things up or you’ll end up hate playing this classic!

Here’s the instrumental riff, this can’t really be varied in the same way…

And finally, here are those extra chords that pop up twice in Sweet Home Alabama, first at the beginning of verse 3, then at the end of chorus 3.
