How to Prepare Chicken Shawarma

Chicken shawarma is a delicious Middle Eastern dish that is typically made with marinated Chicken, cooked on a vertical rotisserie, and then thinly sliced. It is typically served in a pita bread with various toppings and sauces. While it may not be possible to recreate the exact vertical rotisserie setup at home, you can still prepare a tasty chicken shawarma using alternative cooking methods. Here’s a recipe to help you prepare chicken shawarma:

        Ingredients:

  • 1.5 lbs (700g) boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons ground paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust according to your spice preference)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • Fresh pita bread or flatbread
  • Toppings such as tahini sauce, hummus, pickles, tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce

         Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the olive oil, minced garlic, lemon juice, cumin, paprika, coriander, turmeric, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Mix well to form a marinade.

  2. Cut the chicken into thin, even strips or bite-sized pieces. Add the chicken to the marinade, making sure each piece is coated. Cover the bowl and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight to allow the flavors to develop.

  3. Preheat your grill, stovetop grill pan, or skillet over medium-high heat. If using a grill, preheat it to medium-high heat.

  4. Once the grill or pan is hot, add the thinly sliced onions to the pan and sauté until they become soft and lightly caramelized. Remove the onions from the pan and set them aside.

  5. In the same pan, add the marinated chicken pieces and cook until they are browned and cooked through, approximately 5-7 minutes per side. If using a grill, thread the chicken onto skewers and grill until cooked through.

  6. Once the chicken is cooked, remove it from the heat and let it rest for a few minutes. Thinly slice the cooked chicken into smaller pieces.

  7. Warm the pita bread or flatbread in a low oven or on a grill for a few minutes.

  8. Assemble the chicken shawarma by placing a layer of sliced chicken on the warmed pita bread or flatbread. Top it with the sautéed onions and any desired toppings such as tahini sauce, hummus, pickles, tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce.

  9. Roll the pita bread or flatbread tightly to form a wrap or fold it in half to create a sandwich.

  10. Serve the chicken shawarma immediately and enjoy!

You can also add additional flavors such as sumac, allspice, or cardamom to the marinade for more complexity. Feel free to adjust the seasoning according to your taste preferences. Feel free to explore our varieties of non-veg delicacies.
