भगवान ब्रह्मा ने लंकापति रावण की तपस्या से प्रसन्न होने पर उससे एक इच्छा मांगने को कहा। रावण एक ऐसी इच्छा चाहता है जो उसे हमेशा के लिए जीवित कर दे। ब्रह्माजी कहते हैं कि वह अमर होने का वरदान है वो नहीं दे सकते उस क अलावा और कोई वरदान मांग सकता है तो रावण बोलता है कि कोई भी सुर, असुर, पिशाच, नर, किन्नर या अप्सरा उसे मार न सके। रावण वानर और मनुष्य द्वारा न मारे जाने के बारे में कुछ नहीं बोलता है क्योकि उसकी नजर में वो कुछ भी नहीं थे।

वरदान मिलने के बाद रावण हर जगह तबाही खड़ी करने लगता है। एक दिन, वह दंडकारण्य नामक स्थान पर जाता है, जहाँ कभी बुद्धिमान लोग रहते थे। रावण ऋषि-मुनियों को मारना उचित नहीं समझता, इसलिए वह उनका रक्त कमंडल में ले लेता है। वह कमंडल “गृत्समद ऋषि” का था, जिन्हें पुत्री की इतनी इच्छा थी कि उन्होंने माता लक्ष्मी से अपने घर पुत्री का जन्म मांगा। इसके लिए, ऋषि गृत्समद दैनिक पूजा के दौरान कहे गए मंत्र को दूध की कुछ बूंदें कमंडल में मिलाते थे, जिसे रावण अपने रक्त से भर दिया था।

रावण कमंडल को लंका ले गया, और जब वह वहां पहुंचा, तो उसने अपनी पत्नी मंदोदरी को दिया और कहा, “यह विषैले रक्त से भरा है इसे किसी को न दें और सुरक्षित रखें।”

रावण कुछ दिनों के बाद एक पहाड़ पर जंगल में चला जाता है। मंदोदरी को रावण का इस तरह जाना अच्छा नहीं लगता। वह कमंडल में विष पि लेती है ताकि वह मर जाए। कुछ देर तक मंडल का खून पीने के बाद मंडोरी को गर्भ धारण हो जाता है। मंदोदरी चिंतित है कि अब महल के लोग उसके बारे में क्या सोचेंगे कि महाराज यहाँ नहीं है और वह गर्भवती है। फिर मंदोदरी तीर्थ के नाम पर वे कुरुक्षेत्र चली गई। वहां मंदोदरी एक बच्ची को जनम देती है, लेकिन लोक-लाज के चलते वह उसे कलश के साथ में जमीन में गाड़ देती है।

After drinking Mandal’s blood for some time, Mandori becomes pregnant. Mandodari is worried about what the people of the palace will think of her now that Maharaj is not here and she is pregnant. Then she went to Kurukshetra in the name of the pilgrimage. There Mandodari gives birth to a girl child, but due to public shame, she buries her in the ground along with the urn.
