अयोध्या के राजा दशरथ की तीन पत्नियों और उनके चार पुत्रों राम, लक्ष्मण, भरत और शत्रुघ्न के बारे में सभी जानते हैं, लेकिन भगवान राम की बड़ी बहन के बारे में हर कोई नहीं जानता है। वाल्मीकि की रामायण भी राम की बहन शांता के बारे में कोई लेख नहीं है, लेकिन दक्षिण पुराण उस का वर्णन करती है। यह शांता की कहानी है, जो भगवान राम की बहन थीं।

शांता भगवान राम की बड़ी बहन और राम की माता कौशल्या की बेटी थीं। यह शांता के बारे में सच्चाई है। वह बहुत सुंदर थी और अपने हर काम में अच्छी थी। पूजा पाठ से लेकर खाना पकाने तक, वह सब कुछ बखूबी जानती हैं।

वर्षिणी के कहने के आधार पर, राजा दशरथ कहते हैं कि वह शांता को गोद लेने के लिए दे देंगे। अतः राजकुमारी शांता अंगदेश के राजा रोमपद की की एक पुत्री बन गई थी। एक दिन राजा रोमपद किसी और काम में इतने व्यस्त थे कि उन्हें एक ब्राह्मण की आवाज सुनाई नहीं दी जो उनके द्वार पर आया हो। अतः ब्राह्मण को बिना कुछ लिए वापस जाना पड़ता है। राजा रोमपद का ब्राह्मण का अपमान देवराज इन्द्र को अच्छा नहीं लगा। देवराज इन्द्र कुपित हो कर निर्णय करते है कि अंगदेश में बारिश नहीं होगी।

ऐसे में अगर बारिश नहीं होती है तो देश सूखे की चपेट में आजाता है . इस कारण अकाल की स्थिति उत्पन्न हो जाती है। राजा रोमपद ऋषि श्रृंग के पास जाते हैं और उनसे पूछते हैं कि इस समस्या को कैसे हल किया जाए। बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति क्रोधित इंद्र देव को शांत करने के लिए राजा को एक यज्ञ करने के लिए कहता है। राजा रोमपद ऐसा ही करते हैं और यज्ञ के बाद अंगदेश में पुनः वर्षा होती है। अंगदेश की समस्या अब खत्म हो गई है। राजा रोमपद ऋषि श्रंग से प्रसन्न हैं, इसलिए उन्होंने अपनी पुत्री शांता का विवाह उनसे कर दिया।

शांता के बाद राजा दशरथ के और कोई संतान नहीं हुई। इसको लेकर वह काफी चिंतित रहते थे। इस कारण वे श्रंग ऋषि के पास भी जाते हैं। ऋषि श्रृंगा उसे कहते हैं कि उसे कामाक्षी यज्ञ करना चाहिए। राजा दशरथ कामाक्षी यज्ञ करते हैं और खीर को प्रसाद के रूप में बनाते हैं जिसे ऋषि ने उन्हें बताया था। यज्ञ समाप्त होने के बाद राजा दशरथ की तीनों पत्नियों कौशल्या, सुमित्रा और कैकई को खीर मिलती है, जो कि प्रसाद में थी ।

रानी कौशल्या ने राम को पुत्र के रूप में, भरत को कैकई को और लक्ष्मण और शत्रुघ्न को सुमित्रा को। चारों बेटों को नहीं पता कि उनकी बहन शांता कौन है। समय के साथ, राम को अपनी माँ की उदासी के बारे में अधिक से अधिक पता चलता है। उसी समय, राम को पता चलता है कि भगवान राम की बहन शांता के जीवन के बारे में और कोई क्या नहीं जानता था। जब राम को बहन शांता के बारे में पता चलता है, तो वह बहन शांता को अपनी मां से मिलवाता है और वादा करते है कि वे अपने पुराने मतभेदों को भुलाकर साथ रहेंगे।

Varshini said, “Even though I don’t have children, I wish I had a daughter like Shanta.”

Based on what Varshini says, King Dasaratha says that he will give Shanta up for adoption. So Princess Shanta became a daughter of King Romapada of Angadesh. One day King Rompad was so busy with some other work that he did not hear the voice of a Brahmin who had come to his door. So the Brahmin has to go back without taking anything. Devraj Indra did not like King Romapad’s insult of a Brahmin. Devraj Indra gets angry and decides that there will be no rain in Angadesh.

In such a situation, if there is no rain, then the country comes under the grip of drought. Due to this the situation of famine arises. King Romapada approaches sage Shringa and asks him how to solve this problem. The wise man asks the king to perform a yagya to pacify the angry Indra Dev. King Rompad does the same and after the yagya it rains again in Angadesh. The problem of Angadesh is over now. King Rompad is pleased with Rishi Srang, so he marries his daughter Shanta to him.
