Randeep Hooda, Indian actor, turns director in debut “Swatantrya Veer Savarkar,” a biographical film on Veer Savarkar’s life. The movie is expected to come out in theaters later this year. He lost around 26 kilograms of weight because he needed to look like a prisoner in certain scenes. During the shooting, he adhered to a strict diet of consuming one date and drinking one glass of milk daily. Mahesh Manjrekar initially directed the project, but he had to step down due to scheduling conflicts.

Randeep not only directed the film but also produced it and co-wrote the screenplay and dialogues along with Utkarsh Naithani.

Randeep’s dedication to the character reflects his commitment to the project. In an interview, Anand Pandit revealed that Randeep fully immersed himself in the role, leaving no stone unturned in portraying it on screen. For four months, he stuck to a minimalistic diet, consuming only one date and one glass of milk until the shooting wrapped up. Additionally, Randeep shaved off his hair in the same way Veer Savarkar had no hair to ensure an accurate portrayal. The filmmakers launched the film’s teaser on Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s 140th birth anniversary, honoring the film’s subject.

Apart from Randeep Hooda, the biopic also stars Ankita Lokhande and Amit Sial.

VD Savarkar advocated for Indian independence through revolutionary methods and played a pivotal role in shaping Hindu nationalist politics. The authorities imprisoned him in the Cellular Jail on the Andaman & Nicobar Islands in 1910 due to his association with the revolutionary group India House.

Later, they transferred him to Ratnagiri, where he experienced restricted freedom. Savarkar’s legacy remains polarizing, as some regard him as a freedom fighter, while others criticize his communal ideology and the mercy petitions he wrote to British authorities during his imprisonment. He faced arrest in connection with Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination but was later acquitted due to lack of evidence.
