Learn To Add Backgrounds To Your Characters (First Steps) | Drawing -Comics – Manga – Foundation

Line and Color Quick Start Guide: https://www.thedrawingcodex.com/quickstart

Creating scenes and epic imagery from your imagination is one of the best things about being an artist. But getting there is a real challenge.

(It certainly was for me anyway!)

I want to do more videos related to the subject of creating environments and scenes. But the first step if you are a Character artist is something a lot more simple an manageable.

What I found worked for me was to slowly increase the complexity of my scenes. To start with very simple but important interactions.

A simple prop. Or a single piece of an environment. Or a simple more abstract background.

Or even just practicing to place my characters on the ground and have them do something.

It’s starting simple that allows be to make up more complicated images like this one: https://youtu.be/epevlqE7IbE which you can see from start to finish in photoshop.

The key is to think about all the elements of great illustration… as we create simple images.

As I explain in the video. You can be working on all of the skills you need for larger images while tackling something easier that is more inside your comfort zone… or at least reachable.

It’s the constant exploration of how things like the ground plane… or eye flow… or compositional tools… are used by you in your images… that allows you to move on to more and more complex ideas.

The key is to know how you build these images and which tools you really like to use and which skills are important to bring your specific ideas to life.

Bon Courage!

If you want to learn about the techniques I am using based on the Loomis Method you can check out these videos:

Building The Figure – https://youtu.be/wCrGfGZhLWU
Posing The Figure – https://youtu.be/udky6ANxWws
Different Body Types – https://youtu.be/arTzl9gKRNw

Drawing an Action Pose – https://youtu.be/82gOxlqzoSM

With most types of stylised types of art – There is often a mix of structure and perspective and technical drawing…. combined with symbols and abstract features.

Once you get good at blocking in proportion and posing with the Loomis Method you can use it to suit your own style.

It’s just a tool you can use to help you draw cool stuff!

Happy Drawing!
