First Take On Coi Leray’s Radioactive Featuring Skillibeng

On the heels of her party anthem “Players” being certified Platinum Coi Leray dropped her album “Coi,” the follow up to her commercially underwhelming debut album Trendsetters. The 15 track set is littered with samples with features David Guetta, Saucy Santana, dancehall star Skillibeng, Giggs, and Lola Brooke. On the track “Radioactive” featuring Skillibeng there is a sample of Chaka Demus toasting lines from his hit “Murder She Wrote.” The song produced by Johnny Goldstien (Black Eyed Peas, John Legend, David Guetta) has Coi singing love verses:

“Your love is alive, set my heart on fire, yeah
I’m seeing clashin’, it’s all in my mind, yeah
I’m goin’ radioactive, radioactive, radioactive
Radioactive, radioactive, radioactive”

While Skilibeng sings gun lyrics in Jamaican patois:

“Radio wave
“Try stop mi, I’m gon’ spray inna yuh face
Gun shot a drop a stain inna yuh brain
Look pon di gun, nah [?] (Easy)”

All throughout Chaka toasts a “hear dis” here and there. Coi told Ebro of Apple Music that,“I feel like I have to tap every subject. I go through so much [and] I always write through experience.”

Murder She Wrote was produced by riddim twins Sly and Robbie and released by Mango Records. The song is certified Gold in the U.K. for surpassing sales of 400,000 units and is included on Billboard‘s 50 Best Song Interpolations of the 21st Century.

Similar to Steelie and Cleevie’s Fish Market Riddim Muder She Wrote has been the backbone of several Latin and hip hop superstar career hits. Daddy Yankee has one of the most successful samples of the Murder She Wrote riddim for Que Tire Pa Lante which has almost a billion views on YouTube. Chaka Demus and Pliers were not credited at first on the song, but eventually won a ASCAP lawsuit where they were credited.

Nicki Minaj and French Montana sampled for Murder She Wrote for the RIAA Gold selling single “Freak” which peaked at No. 77 on the Hot 100. Jason Derulo’s Too Hot also sampled.
