Mayo Clinic poison specialist charged for fatally poisoning pharmacist wife during marriage woes

A poison specialist and former doctor at the famed Mayo Clinic has been accused of fatally poisoning his wife amid marital difficulties – allegedly trying to have her body cremated immediately while planning to cash in a $500,000 life insurance, according to a criminal complaint.

Dr. Connor Bowman, 30, of Rochester, Minnesota, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of his wife, Betty Bowman, 32, a pharmacist who also worked at the world-renowned hospital, the Rochester Post Bulletin reported.

Betty was admitted at the Mayo Clinic’s St. Mary’s Hospital on Aug. 16 suffering from gastrointestinal distress and dehydration, symptoms similar to food poisoning.

Her condition worsened — with heart problems, fluid buildup in her lungs and the removal of part of her colon — before she died from organ failure four days later, the outlet said.

Connor tried to persuade the Southeast Medical Examiner’s Office not to perform an autopsy and pushed to have his wife cremated immediately, claiming her death was “natural,” according to a criminal complaint.

He also said he his wife “didn’t want be a cadaver” and he inquired about the timeline of toxicology analysis, CBS News reported.

Connor said in his wife’s obituary that she suffered from the rare illness hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, or HLH, a disease in which the immune system attacks the body’s organs. The obit said Betty died “following a sudden onset of autoimmune and infectious illness.”

But she was never diagnosed with the illness and the ME’s Office notified Rochester police on Aug. 21 that Betty’s death was suspicious, the Post Bulletin reported.

One of Betty’s friends told investigators that her marriage was headed to divorce due to infidelity and other issues, and that the couple had separate bank accounts due to Connor’s debts, according to the complaint cited by CBS News.

Connor told the friend he was set to collect $500,000 in life insurance, the affidavit reportedly states.

Investigators interviewed a man who had been texting with Betty shortly before her death, according to the outlet.

On the night before she was hospitalized, the man told police Betty texted him that she was at home drinking with Connor. The next morning, she messaged him that she felt ill and thought a smoothie was to blame.

Police obtained a warrant for Connor’s laptop at the University of Kansas — where he worked as a poison specialist — and discovered he had searched for information about colchicine, a drug used to treat gout that was found in her system after she fell sick.

They also noticed internet searches related to hiding information from police, as well as where to obtain sodium nitrate, a drug used to restrict oxygen in the blood, the Post Bulletin reported.

Connor searched for and found the lethal dosage of colchicine by converting his wife’s weight to kilos and multiplying it by 0.8 – with 0.8 mg/kg considered the lethal amount, KSTP reported, citing the complaint.

She did not suffer from gout, a condition that causes intense pain in the joints, officials said. However, toxicology reports showed it was present in her system the day after she was hospitalized.

Connor also reportedly checked Betty’s e-health records and at one point he was placed on her care team, which allowed him access to her medical records without having to enter his credentials.

He allegedly searched about whether internet browsing histories can be used in court, if law enforcement can track package deliveries and used the query “delete amazon data police,’ CBS News reported.

Connor was arrested on Friday after the death was ruled a homicide. He was charged with second-degree murder and held on $2 million bail after appearing before a judge in Olmsted County District Court.

Police found a receipt for a bank deposit of $450,000 in his home.

“We are aware of the recent arrest of a former Mayo Clinic resident unrelated to his Mayo Clinic responsibilities,” the hospital said in a statement.

“The resident’s training at Mayo Clinic ended earlier this month.”

The couple married in 2021 in Independence, Missouri, according to her obituary.

“Her kindness and intelligence was noticed and valued by friends and strangers alike,” the obit says about Betty.

“She’s one of the people that’s a very pleasant person to be around and a very good worker to work with,” Jason Herold, who worked with Betty at the Mayo Clinic, told the Post Bulletin.

“We were told it was natural causes. How is that even possible?” he added.
