Liz Cheney trashes House Republicans, Kevin McCarthy for ‘elevating’ members who are ‘white supremacists’ and ‘antisemitic’

Former Wyoming Congresswoman Liz Cheney blistered House Republicans Sunday over the turmoil over the speakership – accusing Rep. Kevin McCarthy of cultivating a hotbed of extremism that led to the recent chaos.

“What we’ve seen is a result of the leadership decisions that Kevin McCarthy made back after the 2020 election and certainly after January 6,” Cheney, a Republican, said of the ousted House speaker during an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“Looking the other way in the face of the kind of assault on our democracy that we’ve seen from Donald Trump and his allies in the House, including Jim Jordan; elevating those members, frankly, some of whom are white supremacists, some of whom are antisemitic,” she went on.

The political scion did not specify which House Republicans she believed were harboring white supremacist or antisemitic sympathies.

Cheney served in the lower chamber from 2017 until January 2023 when she was taken down in a primary by Rep. Harriet Hageman.

She stressed that she planned to refrain from endorsing a GOP speaker candidate to avoid spoiling their chances.

“Listen to what you’re saying, that’s crazy!” CNN host Jake Tapper interjected after Cheney talked about the damage her endorsement could do. “You’re super conservative. More than any of the House Republican leadership. You are more conservative than the woman who replaced you — Elise Stefanik — you’re just not nuts and anti-democracy!”

“I think that is a testament about where we are as a country today,” Cheney responded. “And we have to have a party that gets back to advocating those conservative policies and embracing the constitution. That is not what the Republican party is doing today.”

Cheney previously welcomed McCarthy’s ouster as speaker and urged her former colleagues to tank Rep. Jim Jordan’s speakership bid.

The House of Representatives has been paralyzed and unable to move important legislation since McCarthy, a California Republican, was dethroned on Oct. 3.

Republicans in the lower chamber have struggled to replace McCarthy and elect a new speaker. Last week, Jordan, of Ohio, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, bowed out of consideration, following multiple failed attempts at clinching the gavel and a private GOP caucus vote.

During her CNN appearance on Sunday, Cheney bemoaned how GOP hardliners have been able to hijack the Republican conference.

“Those have become part of our politics in a way that certainly they never should,” she argued. “That kind of acceptance of violence is completely inappropriate and dangerous in our politics.”

The daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney, she rapidly rose through the House GOP ranks during her tenure in Congress, ascending to the No. 3 post of chair of the House Republican Conference when her party was in the minority.

But her outspoken contempt for former President Donald Trump and perch as vice chair of the Select Committee on the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot soured her Republican colleagues against her. She was booted from the No. 3 House GOP leadership perch in May 2021.

Top of mind for Cheney with her disillusionment of the GOP was Trump, the 2024 Republican frontrunner.

Cheney took issue with Trump’s criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and suggestion that Iranian-backed Hezbollah was “very smart.”

“They were appalling comments,” she said Sunday. “It’s simply the latest example of why Donald Trump is not fit to be president United States.”

Interlaced with her harsh GOP criticism, Cheney also took some shots at the Biden administration, arguing that the decision to withdraw from Afghanistan “the way that he did” was the biggest mistake the US made in its response to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attasks.

She also ripped President Biden’s Iran policy.

“The administration needs to make some fundamental changes with respect to their Iran policy,” she said. “We need to actually enforce the sanctions with respect to Iran’s oil exports. We got to put the Houthis back on the terrorist list.”

Cheney also denounced the explosion of “antisemitic” and “anti-Israel” sentiment across the country, particularly on college campuses.

“It’s outrageous, it’s dangerous, it needs to stop,” she said. “Israel must take whatever action they need to take to defend themselves. And the United States should not be in the business of telling them to stop, to slow down — they have got to defend themselves.”

Cheney has plans to release a book detailing what she believes went wrong with the GOP.

She also has not ruled out a run for president in 2024.
