Former major league pitcher Dan Serafini has been arrested in connection to a Lake Tahoe, California murder, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Friday.

Serafini, who pitched in the majors for seven seasons, and Samantha Scott were arrested early on Friday in connection to the June 2021 murder of Robert Gary Spohr, who was found dead with a single gunshot wound at a North Lake Tahoe home, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Serafini and Scott also are facing charges regarding their possible involvement in the attempted murder of Wendy Wood, 68, according to WLWT5.

Wood was hospitalized after the shooting but survived, but she then took her own life 10 months later, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

According to the Chronicle, the gunman allegedly waited about five hours after sneaking into the house before Spohr and Wood came back home.

Serafini, who pitched for six different teams between 1996-2007 and also played for Italy in the World Baseball Classic, was the son-in-law of the victims, KXTV reported.

The former pitcher was arrested in the Nevada town of Winnemucca and being held there on a no-bail warrant while Scott was arrested in Las Vegas, the Chronicle reported.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office said its awaiting the extradition of the two back to California, where they are expected to face murder and attempted murder charges.

“After a lengthy two-year investigation involving Placer County Sheriff’s detectives and the District Attorney’s Office, 49-year-old Danny Serafini and 33-year-old Samantha Scott were arrested this morning in Nevada for the 2021 Homewood murder of 70-year-old Robert Gary Spohr and the attempted murder of 68-year-old Wendy Wood,” the statement from the sheriff’s office said.

“PCSO detectives assisted in the apprehension of Serafini in Winnemucca, NV and also assisted in the apprehension of Scott in Las Vegas, NV. We thank the U.S. Marshal Service Reno Office, U.S. Marshal’s Nevada Violent Offender Task Force (Las Vegas), Winnemucca Police Department, and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office with the arrests.”

Serafini was selected by the Twins with the No. 26 overall pick in the 1992 draft, making his debut four years later.

He last pitched for the Rockies in 2007, when he was hit with a 50-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs.
