Max Scherzer amped for ALCS start after battling injury: ‘What you dream of’

Max Scherzer will be back on the hill on Wednesday after more than a month away due to injury.

The Rangers starter — and former Met — will take the mound in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series against the Astros, marking his first outing since Sept. 12 when he strained his teres muscle in his right shoulder.

Scherzer returns with the Rangers ahead 2-0 in the series as things shift to Globe Life Field in Arlington.

“Just trying to get back in the flow of things and just get in my routines, and I get to pitch,” Scherzer told reporters Tuesday about coming back. “You know, thrilled about that. What an opportunity to go out there and get to pitch in the ALCS.

“This is what you dream of.”

Scherzer is returning much earlier than had originally anticipated when general manager Chris Young said in September that it was “unlikely” that the righty would fit into the Rangers’ postseason plans.

The 39-year-old had been expected to miss two months due to the injury.

However, Scherzer threw a simulated game last Wednesday, and his quick return didn’t seem to surprise the starter.

“Given that I was able to get back to actually playing catch within a week of the actual injury, that was a good sign,” Scherzer said. “The longer time you have away from throwing a baseball the longer it takes to ramp back up. I was actually able to get back to a baseball pretty quick.”

Scherzer said that when the injury occurred, he was in a four-to-six-week “window,” and he knew the regular season was out of play.

He put everything he had in getting back healthy by the four-week mark.

“You can never quit in baseball. You can never try to predict baseball,” He said. “You got to out there every single day and do something about it. Fortunately, that’s playing right into my hand.”

Scherzer has a chance to put the Rangers ahead in the series by three games and move the franchise closer to its third AL pennant.

“He’s been working pretty good, so he can get us at least in that area, if not more,” manager Bruce Bochy said, according to The Associated Press. “The guy is hungry to get out there and pitch. He wants to be part of this.”

The former Mets pitcher was acquired by the Rangers before the trade deadline as the Amazin’s sold off several pieces as the franchise veered in a new direction.

Scherzer posted a 3.20 ERA in 45 innings for Texas after the trade.
