It was a tense scene in Washington Square Park Wednesday night as dueling protesters confronted each other about the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, just hours after a bombing at a Gaza hospital killed hundreds.
A line of cops stood between roughly 250 to 400 pro-Palestine demonstrators and their smaller Israel-supporting faction as the two sides screamed at each other.
“You bombed a hospital! You bombed a hospital!” the pro-Palestine protesters yelled at Israel supporters, referring to the strike on the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City, which marked the deadliest single incident since the war broke out after Hamas’ surprise attack on Oct. 7.
“There was a hospital with hundreds of civilians!” another shouted.
Hamas has blamed the deadly blast on an Israeli airstrike, while the Israel Defense Forces claim the hospital was hit by a rocket misfired by Palestinian militants.
“Bring them home!” Israel supporters yelled while holding signs showing children and adults kidnapped by Hamas. “Terrorists! Terrorists! Terrorists!”
“Show your face! Show your face!” the crowd of about 100 yelled at the much larger gathering of Palestinian supporters.
City College student Devin Krishnaswami, 18, said he joined the Palestinian demonstrators “because Israel is abusing Palestine and it’s been abusing Palestine for years.”
“Israel has been playing the victim in all of this but Palestinian children are dying,” he told The Post. “They’re dying as well. We need to recognize Palestine’s troubles.”
Manhattan resident Shelly, 68, was wearing a green Israel Defense Forces shirt on the pro-Israel side and said she has friends in Israel.
“All these people seem to be accepting what Hamas did. I just showed my support to Israel,” she said.
“To me, it’s not pro-Palestine. It’s pro-Hamas,” she said of the opposing crowd. “I’m not happy about it. There’s a lot of them compared to us here.”
Maya, 59, came from New Jersey to show her support for Israel, where she says family members are living in fear.
“I came to defend my homeland. My homeland. My family is there and it’s not OK that bombs are flying over my mother-in-law’s head when she’s sleeping. She’s a Holocaust survivor!” she said.
“My parents were hiding from Nazis because they are Jews,” she continued. “Finally we have one Jewish state and they want to take it from us!”
Mustafa, a 27-year-old Egyptian national, said he and other pro-Palestine supporters are scared that if they speak up, they could be doxxed and lose their jobs.
“We are terrified of saying what we want. You want to ask about our views? We are worried about telling you our views … because the US is helping Israel and doxxing everyone,” he said. “The system is helping Israel oppress Palestinians.”
“We just want to save the Palestinians from genocide,” he said.
At one point during the protest, an unhinged man chased down a Post reporter who was filming his anti-Israel rant directed at pro-Israel demonstrators.
“How many kids did you kill in the last 10 days? Where is the humanity?” he said to the group, which included children. He spat on the ground in their direction.
“You’re just cold-blooded like animals. Even the animals are better than you. They have feelings, you don’t. You don’t — you’re not a human,” he told them, before going after the reporter.
Tuesday’s protests come after widespread demonstrations were held across the city Friday after a former Hamas leader’s call for a global “day of jihad.”
Hundreds of pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched through midtown Manhattan from Baruch College up through Times Square and over to the United Nations Headquarters on 45th Street, waving flags and holding signs demanding an end to the war.
Hours later, dozens of protesters were arrested outside of New York Sen. Chuck Schumer’s home in Brooklyn. The demonstration was organized by Jewish Voice for Peace — a self-described anti-Zionist activist group.
“Not in our name,” protesters chanted outside of his Park Slope home.
New York State Assembly members Zohran Kwame Mamdani, of District 36, and Marcela Mitaynes, of District 51, were among those arrested.
There have been no arrests at Wednesday’s protest in Washington Square Park, according to the NYPD.
Cops were ordered to report in uniform starting Wednesday in anticipation of more protests spurred by the Gaza hospital bombing.
