News24 | REVIEW | Mike Flanagan merges the best of Edgar Allan Poe's work in hypnotic The Fall of the House of Usher

The premise revolves around the Usher family dynasty - rich beyond belief and always a step ahead of the law when it comes to their shady, life-destroying dealings.

When The Haunting of Hill House first appeared on Netflix, many were unprepared for the brutalism of Mike Flanagan's pen, wrapping the classical ghost story within the poetic philosophies of life and death. As a horror fan, this show still ranks as my most bloodcurdling experience ever on the screen. The masterful storyteller's subsequent work still retained that contemplative macabre gothic, but not quite the sheer terror of the first masterpiece. As his contract with Netflix comes to an end, for his last swansong on the streaming platform, Flanagan returns to the horror strand of Hill House in his adaptation of the gothic Edgar Allan Poe's work - The Fall of the House of Usher. While more of an amalgamation of the poet's lifework rather than a direct adaptation of the short story of the same name, it's infused with a modern sensibility that takes direct aim at the evils of today's world.

The premise revolves around the Usher Family Dynasty - rich beyond belief and always a step ahead of the law when it comes to their shady, life-destroying dealings. Headed by Roderick Usher with his twin sister Madeline by his side, the family tree extends to six of Roderick's children - some out of wedlock - and a loving granddaughter. Together, they form an impenetrable fortress against enemies like attorney Auguste Dupin, dead set on bringing their company down for its part in the opioid crisis. Their blessed lives soon come to an end, however, as the heirs start dying in strange and terrifying circumstances, one by one.
