A 2-4 record to start the season and just one win against conference opponents might be enough to get any SEC football coach mad enough to want to kick something. 

But South Carolina head Coach Shane Beamer regretted letting his emotions get the best of him after a loss to the University of Florida this past weekend.

Beamer limped into his weekly press conference on Tuesday, according to The State, and admitted he injured himself when kicked something “he shouldn’t have.” 

Beamer didn’t have a boot or crutches, but did say that he had broken a bone in his right foot. 

“It was after the game, and certainly that was a gut-wrenching and emotional loss,” Beamer said. “I was frustrated and I kicked something I shouldn’t have kicked. I thought I was OK, and then the adrenaline of the game wore off.”

The Gators scored 14 unanswered points, including the game-winner with less than a minute left in the game, in the Gamecocks’ 41-39 loss. 

Athletic director Ray Tanner “died laughing” when Beamer told him the news, but the South Carolina coach was disappointed in himself that he let it happen. 

“Like I told the the players, I don’t condone it. I’m not saying it’s OK to kick things after game,” Beamer said. “I feel bad as a dad. My kids saw me and they were like, ‘What the heck?’

“Lesson learned. Stupid on my part.”

The Gamecocks coach did not reveal what bone he broke, the moment it happened or what he had attempted to kick that resulted in the injury. 

He did say that the toughest part would be getting through next weekend’s game in Missouri. 

“The problem will be in not being on any kind of pain medication,” Beamer said. “I’ll be loopy if I’m on pain medicine. We’ve got to make sure … I’m focused and can make calls.”
