Tom Thibodeau still fine-tuning Knicks’ preseason rotation

If you’re looking for logic in how the Knicks are resting their World Cup players, Tom Thibodeau doesn’t have a good answer.

“It’s a good question,” the Knicks coach said. “It’s just the way we feel we should manage it right now.”

Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart, who both played for Team USA in the summer, have been brought along slowly in preseason.

Brunson combined for just 20 minutes in the opening two games, including 14 in Saturday’s defeat to the Timberwolves.

Hart sat the first game because “he was a little nicked up,” then logged just 7 ½ minutes Saturday.

Thibodeau consistently cited the World Cup as a reason for holding them back, believing they needed less preparation and more rest after an intense tournament.

On the other hand, RJ Barrett, the Canadian who played more World Cup minutes than either Hart or Brunson, has been less restrained in preseason.

Barrett played a team-high 26 minutes on Saturday, and he leads the Knicks in scoring through the two games.

Anthony Edwards, Team USA’s top performer at the World Cup, played 27 minutes Saturday against the Knicks.

“There’s two schools of thought,” Thibodeau said. “Edwards went out and played 27 minutes [on Saturday]. We’re ramping things up. … We’ve got to be ready. Whatever we have to do, that’s what we have to do.”

Thibodeau didn’t mention it but the easiest explanation to the strategy difference is it’s based on age.

Edwards (22) and Barrett (23) are younger than Brunson (27) and Hart (28).

Regardless, the plan is to give all the Knicks starters more minutes in one of the next two games — at Boston on Tuesday or home against the Wizards on Wednesday.

Since it’s a back-to-back set, the starters will sit one of the two.

Thibodeau wouldn’t reveal which one or whether the regular starters will be staggered.

“Haven’t decided yet,” Thibodeau said. “I’m leaning one way but I’m not going to say.”

Barrett scored 15 points in the first quarter Saturday, went to the bench and cooled for the remainder of the 121-112 loss to Minnesota.

“I probably took him out of rhythm,” Thibodeau said.

Barrett still finished with a team-high 23 points, shooting 9-for-12 from the foul line.

“Doing what he normally does,” Thibodeau said. “Attack going downhill. Good balance.”

Fans caught a glimpse of one of Donte DiVincenzo’s strengths — his perimeter defense — with two steals Saturday, including an intercepted pass in the second quarter that the guard turned into a breakaway dunk.

“It takes a little bit of time getting used to your new team and the system,” Thibodeau said, “but the things that he brings I think he’s fitting in seamlessly. He’s playing multiple positions. You start with your defense. That’s a great place to start.”
