Police officers are breaking the very laws they are sworn to uphold with murder, torture and rape by officers topping the list of crimes against those in their custody.
There are 46 333 cases against police officers on the desk of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
Of these, 1 994 were related to death in police custody with Gauteng recording the highest number of cases at 667.
