Lexi Thompson seemed to quiet anybody questioning if she should be playing at the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas with her performance on Thursday, shooting 1-over par through 16 holes before play was suspended due to darkness.

Thompson, 28, became only the seventh woman ever to compete in a PGA Tour event after the LPGA Tour star was invited to compete at TPC Summerlin.

“I played decent,” Thompson said, according to the Associated Press. “I had one bad hole and a few iffy shots. But it’s golf; it was kind of expected.”

She shot 2-over par through the first nine holes of the afternoon, recording the first of her three birdies on the second hole, and then shot for par on holes 1, 4, 5 and 6 on the front nine. 

She had her best drive of the day on the fourth hole when she sent the ball screaming 316 feet off the tee. 

Thompson’s second birdie of the day came on the ninth hole, and her third birdie of the day came on the 13th hole after she hit a 310-foot drive on the par 5.

“I knew I could get a birdie as long as I hit that fairway,” Thompson said of her ninth-hole birdie. “I knew I could get 3-wood up close to the front of the green and make birdie there. Hit a good drive and just really stayed committed to that 3-wood. Tried to make eagle, but definitely take a birdie.”

Thompson shot for par on the next three holes before play was suspended. 

When play resumes on Friday morning, Thompson will have a chance at par on 17 with a 20-foot, 8-inch putt. 

Before the start of the tournament, Thompson last-minute said the invite had been a bit of a last minute one, but it wasn’t something that she could turn down. 

“It was basically an automatic yes,” Thompson said during a press conference on Tuesday, according to ESPN. “It was kind of last minute, last notice. I was like, ‘Alright, OK, let’s go.’ I didn’t know that it was in the works, but I’m very happy that it was.”

Thompson now joins the likes of Babe Zaharias, Shirley Spork, Annika Sorenstam, Suzy Whaley, Michelle Wie West and Brittany Lincicome to have competed in a PGA Tour event. 

The resumption of play on Friday will start at 7:45 a.m. Pacific Time.
