  • Five men are currently on trial for the murder of former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa, who was shot and killed on 26 October 2014.
  • One of the accused claims he was in KwaZulu-Natal at the time of the shooting and that transactions on his bank account would prove it.
  • However, his bank statements revealed that there were no transactions from 25 to 28 October 2014.

One of the men accused of murdering Senzo Meyiwa claimed that he was in KwaZulu-Natal when the soccer player was shot and killed in Gauteng - and his Bank Statements would prove that, except they don’t.

The former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper was shot while visiting his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, at her mother's house in Vosloorus on 26 October 2014.

More than nine years later, five men are on trial in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria for Meyiwa's murder.

One of the accused, Bongani Ntanzi, who was identified by a witness as one of the intruders who entered the house on the evening that Meyiwa was shot, allegedly provided an alibi to police when he was first arrested.

Ntanzi reportedly claimed he was at work at the Sibanye gold mine on the West Rand when the soccer player was shot.

On Tuesday, the State led the evidence of an HR manager at the mine, who testified that Ntanzi did not report for duty on the evening of 26 October and that he went on unpaid leave from 27 October, which his supervisor approved.

During cross-examination, Ntanzi's attorney, Sipho Ramosepele  said Ntanzi did not clock in because he didn't work on Sundays and that he was on leave and had travelled home to Nongoma in KZN.

Bank statements

On Wednesday, State prosecutor, advocate George Baloyi, wanted to hand up Ntanzi's Bank statements, which seemingly contradict another alibi by the murder accused.

Ramosepele objected to the bank statements being handed in as an exhibit.

He said that according to Ntanzi, his bank statements would show certain transactions that proved he was in Nongoma when the soccer star was slain.

However, those transactions are not in the statements.

The bank statements from Capitec show no movement in the bank account from 25 October 2014 to 28 October 2014. No transactions were made, and no money was received during that time.

Ramosepele said because the transactions that Ntanzi claims to have made are not in the statement, they cannot accept the document being made part of the record until they have ventilated and corroborated the information.

He reiterated that according to Ntanzi, he had to perform a certain ceremony and then obtained a loan from the bank to pay for it, which was paid into his account and should appear in the bank statements.

Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng ruled that the statements could be made an exhibit and that it did not stop Ntanzi from challenging the statements with his own evidence.

The trial is expected to continue on Friday, where the admissibility of confession statements allegedly made by two of the accused will be challenged in a trial within a trial.
