Rangers adding Adam Fox as alternate captain was long time coming

The members of the Rangers’ Leadership group the past two seasons — captain Jacob Trouba and alternates Mika Zibanejad, Chris Kreider, Artemi Panarin and Barclay Goodrow — have naturally had their fair share of meetings.

Despite not having a letter sewn onto his jersey like them, Adam Fox has often been included in those important discussions.

That’s because Fox — regardless of his age and experience — has had a presence on the Rangers from the moment he joined the team four years ago.

His dedication and lead-by-example ways have always been there.

And now, so is the letter ‘A’ on his jersey.

The Rangers named Fox an alternate captain on Sunday to complete the six-player leadership group.

If you ask anybody in the locker room, however, this was a natural progression that’s been a long time coming.

“Just who he is and the player he is, he’s obviously well respected by all his teammates and pretty much everyone in the league,” Trouba told The Post. “He’s proven year after year what he’s capable of. I think he’s grown vocally and he’s kind of grown his presence in the room and around the rink.

“It’s a role that he’s naturally taken and is going to continue to take as he moves forward.”

The respect Fox commands from inside the locker room is one thing, but the same can be said for the rest of the NHL.

Fox, who grew up a Rangers fan in Jericho, N.Y., won the Norris Trophy in just his second season in 2020-21, when the Harvard product finished second in the league in points among defensemen with 47 in 55 games.

With that, Fox became one of just two players to win the top defenseman award in his sophomore campaign.

The other? Bobby Orr.

“Well deserved and earned,” coach Peter Laviolette said of Fox, who finished runner up in Norris Trophy voting last season. “He’s sharp defensively. He’s elusive with his game and the puck. He’s shifty and he’s able to find time and space and see plays and see things that maybe others don’t see as quickly or don’t see at all. Everybody plays the game differently, but with him, there’s certainly an instinct that he has offensively that is at a very, very high level.”

Most NHL teams have four alternate captains at most, but the Rangers will bring five into this season.

That’s a testament to the widespread leadership the Blueshirts believe they have in their locker room, especially when considering the fact that a player like Fox was somewhat included even without the formalities.

But Fox’s official induction into the leadership group was on the horizon for quite some time.

It’s just another title for Fox to add to his already-lengthy résumé so early in his NHL career.

“We’ve had leadership group meetings before, even a few years back, he was sitting in on them as well,” Zibanejad said. “I think what you do on the ice is not everything, and the same with what you say in the locker room, it’s not everything. I think it’s a mixture of it and I think he’s very mature for his age. He has been for a long time.”
