Jets vs. Broncos: Preview, prediction, what to watch for

An inside look at Sunday’s Jets-Broncos NFL Week 5 matchup in Denver:

Marquee matchup

Jets WR Garrett Wilson vs. Broncos CB Patrick Surtain

Wilson is coming off a big game against the Chiefs.

He tied his career high with nine catches and was targeted 14 times.

The Jets had a good plan to get the ball to Wilson on some short, quick throws, and it worked well.

Wilson has 21 catches for 225 yards and two touchdowns this season.

Surtain is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL but has no interceptions yet this year.

He does have five passes defensed.

Pro football Focus has Surtain rated as the 45th-best cornerback out of 107.

When these two teams met last year, Wilson caught four passes for 24 yards, but the Jets were a run-heavy team at that point.

Wilson said he is looking forward to matching up with Surtain.

“You’re a competitor,” Wilson said. “If I’m serious about how I go about things, these are the games you look forward to, the matchups you look forward to. I want to prove it against the best, and he’s for sure that. I’m excited to match up with him and have that opportunity.”

Wilson actually faced Surtain in the College Football Playoffs in 2020 when Ohio State faced Alabama.

“He’s a great competitor, great player,” Wilson said. “I played against him in college and the NFL. Just to see how his career has played out, I have all the respect for him in the world. He’s a great player. I’m excited.”

Costello’s call

This game feels like a total toss-up.

The Broncos defense is terrible.

The Jets offense has been terrible outside of the second half last week.

But Denver seemed to figure some things out on offense last week against the Bears, and the Jets will miss D.J. Reed.

A late touchdown beats the Jets.

Four downs

The Hackett Bowl: This game has been circled for a few months, ever since Broncos coach Sean Payton decided to take some shots at the Jets and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett in a July interview.

Hackett was the Broncos’ head coach last year but was fired after 15 games, and Payton called it “one of the worst coaching jobs in the history of the NFL.”

Those comments have added some juice to this matchup, with Hackett returning to Denver.

But he did his best to throw cold water on the idea of a revenge game this week.

“Let’s put it this way, everyone: This game is about those guys out on that field,” Hackett said. “This game is not about me. It’s about me helping them during the week. But I just want the guys to go out there and play a great game. That’s what we’re looking for. What has happened is in the past, we all moved forward.”

Hello Mr. Wilson: When the Jets faced the Broncos last year, Russell Wilson was injured, so this is their first crack at him with this coaching staff.

Jets coach Robert Saleh knows him from his time as a Seahawks assistant early in Wilson’s career.

Saleh heaped praise on Wilson this week. Wilson has thrown for nine touchdowns and two interceptions in four games this year and seems to be clicking with Payton.

“He’s lost weight from last year,” Saleh said. “He looks good. He’s moving around really well. He’s creating off schedule, like I am used to seeing, just game planning against him, being with him in Seattle and then game planning against him in Seattle. His arm is alive. He is throwing the ball accurately.”

Hall monitor: The seat belt is off for Breece Hall.

The Jets running back no longer has a limit on the number of snaps he can play in a game as he comes back from his ACL injury.

Hall has shown burst in the first four games this year but has not put together a game yet in which he pounds away at a defense.

This could be the one.

Denver is where Hall injured his knee last year, setting up a nice storyline for his return there.

The Broncos run defense is terrible.

They are allowing 176 yards rushing per game.

They gave up 350 rushing yards in the 70-20 loss to the Dolphins two weeks ago.

This could be a big day for Hall.

Secondary is primary concern: The Jets are down two of their top four cornerbacks this week with starter D.J. Reed sidelined by a concussion and top backup Brandin Echols out with a hamstring injury.

That leaves them shuffling pieces on the back end, possibly creating some openings for Russell Wilson and the Broncos receivers.

Bryce Hall could be the starter opposite of Sauce Gardner.

He’d be the next man on the depth chart.

The Jets could opt to move slot corner Michael Carter II outside on downs when they are not in nickel or move a safety into the slot role.

Reed has been a big piece of the defense for the past two years, and his absence will be felt.
